hey does the major reallly matter---everyone i talk to seems to say that majoring ina non science is a bad thing--i liked psych more and i stuck with that but i dunno--what do you think?

No, the major does not matter. Do what you enjoy. I was a music major and got in to several schools.

as long as u get good grades....it doesn't matter what major you choose....psych is a good choice....it's somewhat associated with the health care.... 🙂

No, the major does not matter. Do what you enjoy. I was a music major and got in to several schools.

OT, but wouldn't a science major help with the DAT? or do the science sections NOT cover non-pre-req material?

I was a business major and I think if I could do it over again I would either be a science major or another major that I liked with tons of electives.

My business degree had several electives but it was always "business elective" or "social science elective" or "international elective" which meant that I had a choice out of a group of classes, none of which were science classes.

Because of the limited amount of science courses that I was allowed to take on my business degree, I ended up having to take 36 hours worth of science courses post-bacc just to qualify to enroll in dental school. This also took more time than it would have taken to just major in science from the beginning.

Just getting into d-school major does not matter.

But I personally think that the more classes that you take in biology the easier d-school will be for you. If you plan to specialize this advantage may be very valuable to you.

On the flip side, you will have a more well rounded education if you take classes in something other than what you will be learning in d-school. (just my opinion)

From what I have heard dental school are instead looking for diversified students. They see bio or chem major all the time but when some one applies with a non-science major that person sticks out. It’s all about having something in your application that is different from the other students.

Science courses help with the DAT, but the little piece of paper that says you have a degree does not. I just took the required prerequisites.

If you're concerned about it, double majoring is always a good choice and certainly would help if you want to do biopsych or neuropsych research if you don't get into dental school. I decided to major in what interested me so I'm a psych/life sciences/German triple major.

I took 3 semesters of German and almost majored in it. I majored in Music instead for some reason. Now all the German I remember are the dirty words. Funny how that works.

some schools in a way favor biological science majors. their requirement is more than a year of biology.
