So, I thought my undergrad had a Biochem major, but it doesn't 🙁

I wanted biochem b/c i really like chemistry, but i didn't think i wanted to do such hard core chemistry as a chem major would require. I have looked at the majors offered and picked ones that were science related...can somebody suggest another major that is related? I don't know which one now.

Biological Sciences BS Chemistry * BS Ecology and Evolution BS Environmental Studies BA Mathematics * BS Microbiology BS Molecular Biology BS Neuroscience * BS Psychology BS

I was a biochem major in undergrad, and out of all those, I would guess molecular biology would be the closest and still leave out the "hard core" chemistry. However, don't necessarily rule out neuroscience and microbiology. Like you, I liked the chem aspect in biochemistry, but depending on how each class is set up, you may get some biological chemistry info in a micro/neuro major as well.

Be a man and double major in biology (micro, neuro, whatever you want) and chem. TADA! Bio-Chem!

👍

although i would say to just suck it up and major in chem. hardcore chemistry = awesome.

I like microbiology for that. But the straight-up bio sciences looks okay, too. Both sample curricula include the Introductory Biochemistry course (BIOSC 1000), so you'd be covering that base, either way. However, the Microbiology program seems like there are a lot more goodies to enjoy, so if it were me, I'd choose that one.

Did you even read the post? No biochem at his school.....COME ON!

i meant to say suck it up and major in chem. but way to flip out about a typo. 🙄

yeah i am really disappointed that there is no biochem major, they have a grad department in it, so maybe i can do some research there....🙁

how hardcore is chemistry major?

and is there any point in considering neuroscience if i don't really have any plans in doing neuroscience later on?

Depends on how strong your math is I guess. I never thought upper level chem was extremely hard conceptually. I think the upper level math was harder (diff. equations, etc.). Honestly it just depends on your academic strengths and weaknesses.

Just havin' some fun 😉 (I have learned to like the wierd smilies...)

Chem major isn't too hard core, but you will have to go outside more to get prereqs. Major in what most interests you. If you really want biochem, see if you can get some work in a grad lab. I think most med schools like diverse majors, so that is where something like neuroscience would be beneficial

just as another point to consider,

i have to maintain a 3.75 science and overall GPA b/c I am in the Gauranteed Admit Program for Pitt's Medical School...does that make a difference? 😀

At my school, molecular biology = biochem. Although though they are 2 separate majors, the molecular bio class was pretty much the same as my biochem class, thet they used different books.

yeah those are for sure the two most similar. though my experience was not quite like that-- biochem certainly felt more chemmy to me.

Look at the chemistry department, maybe they have a subspecialty major in biology. I have a friend that is taking "Chem-Bio," essentially an analogous major.

the current molecular and cellular bio major and department used to be the biochem major and department at my school, so i'm guessing you are correct.

thanks everybody

upon further investigation I have found that the molecular bio major has a biochem track with it! 🙂
