Just wondering if anyone has any creative ideas about how to make some money on the side during med school? Obviously, nothing ethically questionable and nothing that will take TOO much time... I am a bit business minded under all this science and wondered if you guys have any ideas....

Thanks

I plan on trying to take out a mortgage to buy a house and renting out the rooms that I don't use. It's not going to make me a lot of money, but hopefully it will generate at least some cash flow. It shouldn't take up too much time either.

This is how I prepared a bit for this too... I own a rental home and I co-own two others. If I end up having to move away for med school, I will rent out my primary residence. I'm hoping this will generate a nice bit of $ to help out. So far, it's what's paid for a lot of the secondaries, MCAT, etc...

Yea strip!

You could teach those dreadful MCAT classes.....

Stripping is always a viable option. You can also be a suture tech. At my MS you can work in the trauma center and suture drunks and gangbangers all you want for $10/hr

You could borrow as much money as possible and speculate.

...or you could be a healthy volunteer for clinical research.

Nutrition scientists adore healthy volunteers that will be honest about what they eat and be compliant. I made 250 last semester for getting a few blood draws and eating the breakfast they made for me. It's nothing. Also, I got $125 for a bone marrow sample and plasma is like 20 bucks a pop.

Focus groups are good, too.

I also lifeguard early morning hours at a local indoor pool. I sit on my ass from 5:30-8 and study flashcards while a whopping one person swims laps.

If you are up to the challenge, then you can spend a night or two a week bartending. I'm pretty sure that I'll be doing Americorps next year, and since they pay so poorly, I think I'll sling that juice a couple of nights a week.

Depending on the university, some labs can pay you when you participate in their clinical or research studies as a healthy volunteer. If you have time to wh0re your body out enough, you might make some extra pocket change. (This is what I do (to some degree) since NIHers make a peon's salary. fMRI studies give good money for the least amount of time and invasivness.)

The only thing more terrifying than my stripping act is the audience that shows up for it.

Seems like a computer lab supervisor of some kind would be an easy job (I'm over-qualified), and allow studying while at work - does such a thing exist most places?

i asked someone if donating sperm paid well and they said "no". probably something about an excess of prospective donors or something. i've got plenty of blood, though! bone marrow, its gonna be a long four years! 😀

Not sure how serious some schools are but I seem to recall having to sign something saying I wouldn't work a job during med school. I know of a few people in my class that went ahead and did a few things, but not sure of doing anything formal like bartending.

I'd wait until I got in and got started if I were you guys to get a gauge on what type of free time you'll have.

Passive income (rental, investment, etc.) is good. Research studies are good.

Other active income: unless you are very unusual, the small amount of money you will make is not going to be worth the effort and lack of sleep. Time is in very short supply in med school. Wait until you've gone through a month or two and then see if you still feel like working on the side.

I guess I can use my degree in Exercise Physiology to make a few bucks as a personal trainer. I have a few friends with bull @&it certifications making up to $95 an hour training yuppie clients in Manhattan. 😱

I second this - I am currently in a study that will pay me $635 for eating their food for 12 days (read free food!), and getting my blood drawn and resting metabolic rate measured on 3 of those days. It's great!

Thanks for the ideas and keep 'em coming!....

And I'm not talking about hourly rate type jobs like med shool librarian ect...IMO, in general they would not be worth it. I like the realestate ideas and the personal trainer one too...
