Hi,

I'm applying July 2011, and I wanted to make my OptomCAS account now. I emailed OptomCAS and they said that my application will not be considered active until I click e-submit....but to register for the OptomCAS account what information do you have to provide?

If you make an account now it will disappear when they close this cycle. You will not be able to log into it or retrieve any info anyway. You should just wait until they open the new cycle in July 2011 and open an acct then.

I wish we could save it all. I am applying in July 2011 as well. It would have been cake if we could just start writing our essays now. I am slightly worried about the whole process. 🙂

dude i know! but the optomcas emails i wrote weren't very helpful. they said that any acct with a 2010 id will be deleted. i don't know what that means because i haven't got an account. so i'm emailing them after new years, so then technically any account that is made has a 2011 id or whatever.

when i emailed them asking them what info/payment is needed to make an account, they said "log in with your information"

LOL.

My guess is you can get a 2011 ID starting July 15th 2011...so as advise2u mentioned we gota wait till July and then open an account which means I gota stay up all night in July writing countless essays, enter my grades and gather the LORs.

yeah I guess 🙁 but i talked to some older kids that are applying this cycle, and they told me they wrote a PS before they even made an optomcas account, which i didnt understand?

You can write your PS on your own before you create an account... you do it in a word processing program and then just paste it in when it comes time to apply...

really? What is the question? Word limit?

This is what it is, assuming they don't change it from year to year.

The essay for OptomCAS is "Please describe what inspires your decision for becoming an optometrist, including your preparation for training in this profession, your aptitude and motivation, the basis for your interest in optometry, and your future career goals."

Your essay should be limited to 4500 characters. For each school to which you are going to apply, you may tailor your essay on the abovementioned topic. After you save your essay(s), you may upload them to be sent to the appropriate designated schools in the "School Designations" section found at the end of the application. We encourage you to name each essay to correspond with the name of each school.

You cannot make an OptomCAS ID until July 15 of the cycle you are applying. Also, I had already written a PS for my LOR writers to have to assess my motivation, reasons for going into the field, etc. I simply edited it when the application came open. It would be wise to have prepared information about all of your extracurriculars, shadowing experiences, and have your transcript mailed to your house. The application takes some time to fill out, but it really isn't difficult. Also, I didn't write separate essays for each school and still got accepted everywhere I applied, and it doesn't have to be submitted the day you create an ID. Just be organized- there is plenty of time to fill things out. I submitted my application 7/22 which was one of the earliest dates of everyone I know, and I had interviews on the first day of interviews at every school I interviewed at. Just relax. It's nothing worth freaking out over or staying up all night to complete.

Totally agreed. I didn't submit mine til mid October and still got interviews for everywhere and acceptances. It's good to get familiarized and started with it as soon as it opens but no need to kill yourself to apply in July.

thanks a lot for the advice 😀 and wow that's an early date!!! but i have a question! why do you say have your transcript mailed to your house?

also, how does LOR work? don't you have to have an optomcas id first before you get your LORs?

I had the transcript mailed to my house at the end of spring semester so that I was sure that I was entering the right grades in the coursework section when the application opened. I sent a SECOND transcript to OptomCAS once the application opened (once the cycle has opened and you create an account, it will give you instructions on where to send the transcript). YOU have to manually enter all of the grades you have made in college- the transcript is sent to OptomCAS to be verified.

For the LOR, you give them the information of your letter writers, and then print the forms for the writers or send them an electronic copy. The recommenders send the forms to OptomCAS.

Like I said before, stop stressing about it. Once you create an ID, it will give you all of the necessary instructions to complete ALL of the sections.

i emailed optomcas asking if this was the question, and the said:

"Please check
the portal once the application cycle opens because questions tend to change."

But the question you posted was publicly avail and you don't have to make an account to see it, its under faq-essay on optomcas.org.....

so i think they're just being confusing?
