When doing an elective (esp. an audition elective), how are these grades reported on our transcripts? As a general elective, or do they specify "Radiology/Anesthesiology/ect"? I ask because I would imagine when applying to residencies you would want those electives titled so interested programs can see specific grades in the field. Thank you!

Mine were all P/F. Needless to say, it was hard to not Pass. Sometimes, showing up was not even required...

4th year is about letting loose and enjoying the last bit of freedom you have. Most people murdered their lives in medical school. Residency is worse. Enjoy the time. Get those passes. Any of the programs I did elective in were essentially irrelevant to a given program. The school does not send "transcript updates" throughout the year. My grades through August were in, and that was that. All of the clerkships up until then had been H/HP/P/F

Of course, check with your program or the program you will be rotating through ot make sure. Sometimes "electives" are treated as "sub-i" for aways.

got ya, thank you!
Reason I ask- I'm 3rd yr, and had an early elective... I chose Anesthesiology just for the intubation experience to be honest (I was sure I was EM even before med school), and low and behold I LOVED anesthesiology. (I promise this isn't meant to be conceited) It wasn't that I just enjoyed it, I was highly complimented in my eval and received a 100% (we use numerical grading).

If I chose this avenue of medicine, I'd like my grade report to say "anesthesia" instead of "elective", ya know?

Ok, so this is a good question for your school's admin--cause nobody else will know for sure. My school, and I would imagine every other school in the country, reports what rotations you've taken along w/ the grade received, just like any other courses.

Our school lists the location, department, and a letter grade. To be honest, tho, I think your evals and/or letters of rec + the impressions you make are most impt.

great point actually.... i'll email.

I've heard that in general residency directors don't care about the grade for an elective rotation since there tends to be a significant amount of graded inflation for them. Moreover, unlike clerkship that are H/HP/P/F, quite a few places are just P/F for electives.

It definitely shows interest in anesthesia that you took the elective, and that your scored perfectly in it. Just make sure you grab the strong LOR now that the elective is done - this is what will really make you stand out.

Best of luck!
