Ive seen threads about this, and I wonder how common it is, as an intern, to have opportunity to make any extra money. Im just thinking how nice an extra couple of hundred dollars a month would be.

I understand moonlighting. Im talking about as an intern. People talk about doing discharge summaries, etc. I know its hospital specific, but does anyone have any experience doing anything else?

I never heard about this during my current intern year...all anyone talks about is moonlighting later on.

You can forget about moonlighting as an intern. You'll be way too busy and I know of no program that will allow it. Remember, any moonlighting that you do would have to be within the 80 hour work week. that's why no program will allow it as an intern.

Well, that's not totally true. At my program, "internal" moonlighting (at our program's various hospitals) counts towards the 80-hour workweek limit. However, "external" moonlighting does not.

Of course, this is assuming you've already taken and passed Step 3.

Ok. NOT talking about moonlighting. Some people have mentioned being able to do discharge summaries for attendings and other various things around the hospital for extra $$$. Thats what Im asking about. I know that there is no moonlighting as an intern,

there's actually quite a bit of moonlighting your intern year in EM programs. Depends on the programs, but you can pick up extra flight shifts if they have air EMS, observation unit shifts with an attending, urgent care in the institution etc...

I saw all of the above examples on the interview trail last year. All ranging from 30-50 bucks/hour.

If you're at an academic institution you can look around for what trials are going on. Usually psychology needs people and its easy money, like $50 for filling out forms. Sleep studies maybe?
Other options include donating plasma, sperm/eggs, selling extra meal tickets, selling drug rep handouts to med students....

Probably best to just focus on learning. The extra $$ will be negligible, I'd think. You'll be making more than enough in a short time.

Intern year is busy enough, you'll be too tired to want to do extra work or stay extra time to dictate other attendings' discharge summaries (it takes me forever to get myself to medical records to dictate my own!) And after your intern year you can moonlight if you want more cash flow. I am all ready to apply for my unrestricted license (passed all 3 steps of COMLEX - no NBOME exams ever again!) so I can't wait to moonlight at my hospital...doing admissions for $60 an hour 😀

Worked with an intern who was also a pharmd and he takes shifts at walgreens - he makes his housenote in one shift. I am very jealous to say the least. I know it doesn't help you idio - just thought I would vent my jealousy! Maybe you should moonlight as a country and western singer?

I might bartend. I only have about 18435187461379 years of experience doing that. Of course its ridiculous to think that I could work extra, but its also ridiculous to think that my gas bill to heat my home might be almost 400 dollars.

Yes you can, legally. But if your program doesnt approve (and finds out) they are within their rights to penalize/terminate you as per the resident contract you signed (which will likely clearly stipulate 'no moonlighting without permission')

And yes, I called to set up my gas service today and they told me it would be a 925 dollar deposit. I said, "how do you arrive at that number?" and she said, "we add up the two highest bills over the last year, which are november and january, both at 460 dollars".


That makes me feel good. Solar panels anyone?

Thankfully the winters are pretty mild in our parallel. The lady told me that the gas cost for our home doubled 2005-->2006, "purely because of Katrina". i dont quite know how fuel costs have responded since last winter, though. Im expecting the worst.

It may still save you a chunk of change to add more insulation and bundle up a bit inside. I just can't imagine a gas bill that high & we've got gas heat, water heater, clothes dryer, and oven/stove.
