I recently matched into anesthesia (start 2006) and start my TY in july. Does anyone have any advice for making the most of my prelim year in preparation for a career in anesthesiology; both in terms of building a strong knowledge base in pathophysiology and in getting better at procedures (intubations, lines, etc)? My program requires 3 months of gen med, 1 medical ICU, 1 cards inpatient, 1 peds, 1 ER, 2 electives with call, and 3 non-call electives. Are there any electives that you feel I MUST take? I heard that pulmonlogy and SICU are good months.

I did pulmonary. It was OK, but nothing spectacular. If you think of most of the consults that you will get than that will give you some idea. Lots of COPD, pneumonia, OSA, COPD, OSA, COPD. They are great physicians in the ICU arena, but I thought the work on the floor would not be that helpful overall.

Cardio was great. I feel a little more comfortable now with MI's and arrythmias that I will probably encouter a lot.

SICU, awesome. Nuff said. Do it times 2.

ENT? I am doing this one coming up here. I heard they know a few airway things so I'm looking forward to it.

I got a lot out of surgery as well. You do manage sick patients and I became very familiar with post op pain on call! Plus it's fun to be in the OR.

Take as much ICU as you can..cause its actually fun. Avoid surgery cause you will just be another intern scutmonkey. I actually must say that my medicine months were alright. I got a TON of procedures like centeral lines, a-lines, LPs, thorocentesis, Paracentesis.. you name it. All cause my medicine residents hated procedures.
