Hello all.

I am considering applying to D school this summer and have a few questions I hope some of you can answer. By the end of spring semester I will have my bio, gen chem and an elementary O-chem course done. I will still have to take O-chem and physics over the summer, however.

My question is, would I be competitive applying before I have completed O-chem and physics (assuming I do well on the DAT).

Thanks

What's the "switch" that you are making? 😕

Hello all.

Most dental schools require General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, English, and Biology (with the trend of Biochem & other upper-level courses being thrown in there for many schools).

Have you taken other suggested science courses? Perhaps more than 1 year of Biology? I think it will be really hard for dental schools to evaluate your academic capability if you have only taken Biology, General Chemistry, and English. If you did well in these classes and other classes, I think your application can easily be competitive. However, if you didn't do well in these classes, then it will raise some serious red flags in your application.

Many dental applicants these days do far more than just the minimum requirement before applying, so it will be hard to compete with them if without some other good factors in your application (extracurricular, your overall GPA, DAT, etc) Good luck! 🙂😀😉

The title of this post was a mistake (referred to switching from pre-med, but is now irrelevent).

I allready have my bachelor's in psychology (3.6 GPA) and am doing post-bac work (3.88 science GPA so far). At the start of summer I will have completed a year of for-majors biology, general chemistry and a smattering of other biologies and maths. As I said, I will have also taken a non-majors O-chem (mostly to prepare for the intensity of summer O-chem).

Hope that clarifies things and makes it easier to give some suggestions.

Thanks for all your help.

I dont see you getting accepted without having orgo and physics, and even if you focus and get to finish those classes and take the DAT before the deadline, you still don't have any upper level science classes (i guessed lol). If you want to apply, do it, but my suggestion is to study one more year and get at least 3 upper level science classes. In the end your are going to end up saving time and alot of money with the applications and AADSAS.

If you already have your degree in psychology, I assume you have several upperlevel science courses. If you will have non-majors o-chem and that you are planning on taking the actual o-chem during the summer, I think you have a decent shot at getting admitted (depending on your DAT score and many other factors of course). Other users might have opinions different from mine though 🙂😀😉

I do have some upper division science courses in which I did well. Still, it would be a bit of a gamble. Thanks for the input.

Oh nmv then hahaha
Well, from now on i guess its your decision. Just be sure you're not giving away 2000 bucks 😛
