are there any residents (or anyone) who could comment on how malignant these 2 prog are? I am having trouble figuring out which one to rank higher. I am especially interested in how the call sched is in 2nd and 3rd year (I know internship is going to be hard anywhere). appreciate your help!

My impression at Baylor was that they had no call free months all three years. However some months may be call once per week for example. Third year unlike many other programs, can still be intense with units and continued q4. All this being said, I thought this was a top notch place in terms of facilities and training. They had pretty impressive fellowship placement rates and I think will make you a great internist. This was just the impression I got in the interviews and from the residents. I did not interview at Columbia. I think Baylor is more work than most programs, but I think it would be worth it.

That is what I understood from my interview day also, I was hoping I was wrong (did you interview there on nov 19th?) I mean I'm not lazy, but no call free months during ALL your residency :scared:

I graduated from Baylor Med school last year. I would agree with what dochuffman said. Baylor is a program where you will definitely work very hard. However, it is only the schedule that is somewhat malignant compared to some other places. Comments about the attendings being malignant are not true. I left to go to a "top 10" program for IM residency and I don't think the training that I am receiving is significantly better than what is offered at baylor. Though my schedule is a little more cushy.

I would say that about 75% of the people in my class that were going into IM stayed at baylor which says pretty good things about the program.

I interviewed at columbia last year but don't know a lot about the program. I did get the impression that there may be some issues with competition between the residents there but I couldn't say one way or the other honestly.

Overall caliber of the other residents probably a little higher at columbia I would say.

Columbia is a very tough residency. You will work very very hard, and have to do your own patient transfers, IV’s, typical university red tape. You will also receive a very good education as a resident. Other residents will use you (if intern) and will make you earn respect. As far a fellow possibilities, you will have many choices.
