malpractice cost

i'm not sure about this difference in particular, but you'll have to specify where and what specialty you're talking about before anybody can give you more info
 
Usually, malpractice is cheaper for many specialties in academia because these are the physicians who are practicing "standard of care". Many physicians in academics supplement their income by testifying what they would have done for plantiff's and defense lawyers. That being said, I'm sure that malpractice is higher for some physicians in academia because usually patients who present to academic medical centers are sicker and associated with worse outcomes. But overall, the avg malpractice premium is lower according to one of my attendings.
 
malpractice costs are higher for specialists working in private firms or practices. they are lower in the academia for the following reasons:

a) they have a large institution to absorb the costs
b) even though they engage in more risky medical procedures than their counterparts; insurance companies know that they are practicing in teaching hospitals which have better standards and are better equipped mentally and physically than thier private counterparts.
c) if an academic system is incorporated a health system then by law they have a slightly reduced liability
