Anyone care to talk about their experience with malpractice coverage for moonlighting during residency. Moonlighting at our hospital is covered through residency but it does not pay much; pay is better outside the system but we have to buy our own malpractice coverage. I am looking at 10-15 hours per week.

Not a terribly helpful answer, but I make sure that my malpractice is covered wherever I moonlight. That way I don't have to work for 2 weeks to cover the premium and actually make any take-home.

Try to get a higher hourly rate if you do have to buy your own.

The APA reportedly has good solid coverage at very reasonable costs, is flexible, and has discounts for new psychiatrists in practice. Their coverage comes through this company and website:

I have looked at that website before and it provides really helpful answers.

I think it'll probably be a good idea to moonlight only where they cover your insurance. One I am talking to right now provides occurence coverage. From what I have read, that is probably the best type, is that right?

P.S.- Any experience with locumtenens.com people?

Employees of Partners HealthCare (i.e. Harvard Longwood, MGH/McLean) have all moonlighting insurance covered by the same insurer who insures us for in-house training. Assuming a resident is in good standing in his/her program, you literally fill out one piece of paperwork (a single side of a single page) on which you list all of the potential moonlighting locations outside Partners and have the Chief of the department sign the bottom, and you're all set.

I can't comment on the "tail" coverage and other specifics, but I would assume that it's a reasonable insurance package as our residents who moonlight do not obtain additional coverage.

From what I understand, it's one of the perks of these programs, though I imagine other programs have this perk, as well.

Wow! That sounds pretty convenient! I don't think we have it here but I'll definitely check.
