I've heard mixed reviews about Derm programs being sexist - some saying that programs prefer women and others saying that programs are recruiting more men to balance out. What do you think - does the man hate exist?

The politically correct answer? No. All applicants are treated equally.

The real answer? Maybe. Just like with anything else in life, how can you tell? Some programs may prefer women. Some may want men to "balance out the numbers". Some don't like people of a certain ethnicity. Some don't like people of a certain religion. Some don't like people because of certain distinguishing physical characteristics. You just can't tell.

Programs, especially the larger ones, always strive to get a good mix of Residents, and that *can* include gender and/or other factors.
Personally, I've never really seen or perceived sexism as one of the determining factors in Resident selection. Programs, however, do disciminate. They take only what they percive to be the best in the applicant pool. 😀
