Critterbug. I think mentioning the piano is huge!! It improves your ability to use both hands and fingers. Quick, call the schools you applied to and tell them to add that...🙂
Well, I took lessons for years and years when I was young, but haven't touched a piano in a long long time, so I didn't feel right mentioning it in my application. I'm not great by any means.
I was also on the golf team in college. However, I did not make the traveling squad. And the time I was called up to play, I couldn't go because the tournament was a two day tournament and it interfered with my OCHEM lab. And because I was on academic scholarship, I felt that OCHEM was more important. So, I wanted to put that on my app also, but didn't, since I didn't consider myself part of the team since I never actually contributed. I just practiced with them.
Golf is my true passion though. I absolutely love it. I know golf is not the best thing to mention when talking about manual dexterity, but it does take great eye hand coordination. I consistently shoot in the high 70's low 80's from the back tees. I think thats quite an accomplshment as golf is about the hardest thing I've ever tried to master, including the piano !!
However, I don't get to play much anymore. I did go out the other day and shot the best round of my life, a 75
(OK, now I'm just bragging 😀 )Advertisement - Members don't see this ad

SDN should be classified as a part time job. Maybe we can include it as research experience too. What do you think?

I repair hearing aid circuits under a microscope. It is very delicate and requires good dexterity. I also do video-otoscopy and cerumen management in my patients small and often tender ear canals. Other than that, I enjoy fishing which requires good knot tying even with cold wet fingers, golf (made my own clubs), pencil drawing, and I can type. Oh yeah...and I can play a great game of "Where is thumb-man?" with my two-year-old.

LOL, nice.Originally posted by Balki

actually, on a serious note, I think cross-stitching would be a great way to develop dexterity. I've never tried it, but it looks challenging. My girlfriend would prob raise an eyebrow if she ever caught me doin it though

Ok, I have a few that might add to the "gay" joke. Keep in mind that I am married with a kid.
Knitting and Quilting (mom taught me)
Counter Cross Stitching (mom taught me)
Hair cutting (saves myself and friends/family a hellofalot of money!
Piano/Guitar
Type 70 wpm
You might be lead to think that my mom raised me to be a sissy, however, at the same time I was heavily involved with sports and I guess that's why my mom felt comfortable enough to get me interested in those things.
I wonder what adcoms will think!!
