Many interviews, many WL, much distress

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I do not believe that it is abnormal this year. I suspect that the T20 schools are expecting a higher yield this year as some candidates that in other years would have chosen a cheaper school or one in a more desirable location will choose the higher ranked school out of a concern for the new P/F nature of Step 1. Therefore, out of an abundance of caution, the T20s may be parsimonious in extending offers of admission. After the dust settles, some may find that they underestimated their popularity and they will then carefully fill from the waitlist. Be patient. You won't go 0-6. Please, keep us posted.

Thanks much, @LizzyM this is a character-building test of patience, that’s for sure

Among some other interviews, I had 6 II at T20 schools, and despite extremely positive feedback from my interviewers in responses to thank you notes and such, I'm looking at 6 WL.. Is this normal? 🙁
I also had 6 interviews at T20 schools. Turned into 4R, 1 WL, and 1A. Seems like this is a common experience. I hope you get off one of those WLs!

If they underestimated their popularity, wouldn't they be less inclined to use the WL?? 🙂

They expected more offers to be accepted than were accepted. They overestimated how popular they would be and ended up with empty seats. Imagine a restaurant expects a crowd on a holiday weekend and sets up 50 chairs on the patio for the crowd. Only 30 customers show up. Did they overestimate or underestimate the restaurant’s popularity?

Overestimated!!! Is this like CARS??? 🙂

If they underestimated, and 70 people show up, will they be pulling from the WL, or paying people to leave and come back next week?

Accepted at a T5 earlier today!!! Thank you all for the support, and I hope you continue believing in yourselves too bc waitlist movement is real 😀

I’m in a similar boat to the OP prior to her amazing (!) good news. My interviews ended up as 4R, 4WL and 1A (at a school that I ended up not loving on my interview day visit.) When should I really start planning to go to the A and give up on the waitlists?

When you have to make the CTE selection!!! Honestly, movement can and does happen right up until the end, but we are right now in prime time for WL movement, so I'd remain hopeful through May, and then become more and more focused on attending the A school starting in June and ending when you make the CTE selection. You are going to see a ton of good news here in the next few weeks, and some of it might even come your way. Good luck, and hang in there!! 🙂

I’m completely feeling this.

Got 4 IIs at T-20 schools that all turned into WLs. Only schools that have accepted me are unranked or ranked 94-122. On one side I’m thankful I got into med school (the goal) but on the other side kinda worried w Step 1 now being P/F.

Congrats OP! Hope to be in your shoes soon.

I was waitlisted at four T10 schools and while I'm grateful to be going to med school, the school I'm currently PTE at is my undergrad institution and I know I won't be able to grow as much as I would at the WL schools. This feels like that terrible day two of my dream schools released decisions on the same day and I waited anxiously for a phone call that never came — but every day. My current PTE school has an early CTE deadline too (early June), which does not add much comfort. I just feel like I can't be excited about/look for housing until I know for sure I have no chance at the WL schools.

Glad to see some of y'all getting WL love!

I'm currently on 6 MD WL and still patiently waiting for a call/e-mail. However, I am accepted at a DO school I am in love with (except the price), so if I don't receive a WL acceptance it won't be the end of the world for me.

@dojacat did you happen to send an update? I just got a publication in a great journal (tbf im 14th author, so not like it’s a first author or anything!) and I have no idea if it’s worth it to tell schools??

I did! I sent two update letters and ended each one iterating my interest/intent to commit. I didn't have super notable updates either, but I think showing the schools you're still interested and eager can help.
