I just recently heard about the drug Marinol. Since it has THC in it, does it do the same thing basically that medical marijuana would do if it was legal?

I was just curious because I remember hearing just recently that Bush voted against marijuana being used even for medical purposes. If Marinol's active ingredient provides the same benefit that marijuana does, then there would be no reason to legalize marijuana even for medical use would there?

Marinol is a legal but controlled substance indicated to stimulate appetite..in wasting patients. Marinol is is THC. But potheads claim that the "high" from Marinol is not as "high" as smoking it.. Let's face it.. MJ contains many more complex compound than just THC.

Is there anything else that is medically beneficial in marijuana that Marinol doesn't have? From what I've read, the purpose of Marinol is to help cancer and hiv patients regain their appetites. I remember hearing Bob Marley and Peter Tosh sing about how marijuana helped cure glaucoma. I wonder that had any truth to it or not.

Interesting site with facts about Marinol: http://www.usdoj.gov/dea/ongoing/marinol.html

Sure THC can ease the progression of glaucoma.. but there are better treatment options for glaucoma than puffing toxic smoke into lungs and holding it for a while..right?

sounds more like an excuse to get high..don't u think?

Medical marijuana is a CII in WA, there is just no legal distribution system. Basically, physicians can write a "get out of jail free" slip for patients. I only know of two who do this, both in Seattle. All of the patients they do it for have some legitimate medical need. Those who have tried marijuana and then Marinol say the Marinol is notably inferior. I believe them, since THC is very poorly absorbed orally and is just one of many active substances in marijuana.

BTW, when I say medical need, I mean they tend to have pain associated with end stage HIV, cancer, etc. Most patients with glaucoma treat with other methods.

Bananaface - I heard that Marinol will only work if you've actually smoked marijuana in the past. Is that true or not?

No. Those who have previously tried marijuana in the past are more likely to "fail" it in favor of the real deal. This is based on patient experiences which have been discussed with me.

I have recommended marinol for use in some of my patients who have poor appetites and it seems to work quite well. Megace seems to work well for some and not for others, and some docs are against using it for fear of embolisms (yet I only avoid in patients with PVD).
