I want to clear up this whole, "are there interviews at Marquette and are they required" question

For those who got in:

1. Did you get asked to interview?
2. Did you interview?
3. In-state or out

I am out of state, was fortunate to get in, but it took an interview.

It's so weird. I called them today and they said my application is on hold and going to be review is few months... it's already december... I guess it's a rejection then..

i got my rejection today... 🙁

hoffa, how did you find out your acceptance, did you call them? also, did they update your infosource? i apologize if you already posted this info on another thread, i don't remember.

1) invited for interview
2) interviewed
3) out of state
4) no word back from them yet.

I checked infosource

hm, my infosource hasn't been updated since september, i wonder if i am 'on hold' over there or something.

Not at all. It just means you are waitlisted and they'll review your application after they get deposits. The first deposits aren't due until Jan. 15, so they don't need to review your application until around that date.

I got an interview
Im instate
I got accepted

I posted this already, but I too am "on hold" at Marquette. At NYU last year my application was on hold due to the fact that they wanted me to re-take the DAT (which I did in 5/04). So during that time, my application sat in the office until I submitted my scores and the official scores came in the mail (I was then waitlisted on June 1, 2004 and am still waitlisted to this day). In this situation (Marquette), it basically means the same thing except they arent waiting for us to submit information. Sometime in January (probably January 15th) they have to sit down, go over our qualifications, and see how many spots they can then give out to try to fill the class.

Gavin, as a person on an admission committee, can you break this down a little more? On January 15th people have to submit a deposit or give up their spot, correct? At this point, about how many more acceptances are given out (basically how much does the waitlist move)? Do schools send out more acceptances other than the ones they sent out today and January 15th (ie in between these dates)? When do schools sit down to organize a waitlist and when can you find out how many applicants have taken a seat at a particular school?

About Marquette, no letter yet, but I guess I should expect it soon (hold letter). Nendo, did you interview there or just get a rejection letter? If you dont mind me asking what are your stats? I wonder how many people are on hold....

Lastly, I called NYU today and my file is still being reviewed...frustrating. Its been 2 cycles, its very hard to remain patient, but we shall see.

I know that for in state, interview does not mean acceptance.

They put my appication on "Hold" too. I don't know whether to cry or be happy about it. But, it makes sense because I didn't do that well on my DAT. Has anyone been on hold before at marqutte and got accepted? If so, please share some ideas with us. Thanks for your help.

I just called Marquette to clarify some stuff about being on "hold".

-They are going to continue interviewing out of staters (after Jan. 15th when they know how many will accept their offers) through January (possibly longer)

-2,000 Applicants. 900 denied so far. 90 acceptances sent out. Of those 90 acceptances, I asked the admissions director to guess the percentage of those who put down deposit money. She said it varies but guessed about 30% (so about 27 spots filled). That leaves 63 potential spots left.

-The Held people are going to be re-reviewed in January (after the 15th). There are b/w 900-1000 students that are on hold. Apparently its not 1010 (if you do the math from above)......she said probably less than 1000 are on hold.

-In January approximately 30-60 will get to interview (out of state), again depending on Jan. 15th. So basically 60/1000 chance as of now. Who knows this could change, so dont worry.

A great analogy I heard was from a D1 at a well known school who I was on the phone with last night....he said on December 1 all the starters take the field (sports analogy) but as the cycle rolls along eventually all the players on the team will get their chance to play. He said he was one of those who wasnt a starter (average stats) and now it doesnt matter because he's on the team (in dental school). He didnt get most of his interviews until 2nd semester and got into 4 of the schools he interviewed at (some waitlisted and then accepted, but in the end it doesnt matter).

It makes a big difference if you are instate or out of state. Marquette accepts 40 students from WI and 40 from everywhere else. If you are in state, it is going to be a lot harder to come off of the waitlist (most WI applicants have Marquette as #1 choice). If you are out of state your odds are much better. Many more out of staters receive acceptances then actually take them. But then you are competing with a greater number of applicants ( roughly 175 in state and rest out of state) My point is, there is much more movement on the waitlist).

Derock, are you from WI? I am not sure I get what you are saying....being on "hold" is different than being waitlisted...they havent made a decision on us yet. I wonder how many of the held students are in state? Anyway, this years D1 class has ZERO out of staters at UIC. I guess it doesnt matter because you are going to MUSOD. Congrats

yah, I'm from WI. ok my fault, I thought you got waitlisted...thats what I was referring to. Good luck.

I also got the letter today saying I am on 'hold.' I'm so disappointed. If they don't review the apps till mid Jan, chances are I will have out a depoist done since I will be afarid i won't get in anywhere else. I shouldn't complain though.

fo all the in-staters for marquette, what were you stats? i'm also a Wisco resident, just wondering what the standard seems to be for wisco residents. also how many wisco residents apply to marquette you think?

just got the official word... i'm a member of the 'on hold' club for marquette.

Joining the 'on hold' club also. I am going to update them with this semesters grades. Hopefully that will help.

I'm also an offical letter-carrying member of the "on-hold club" 👎 It's discouraging, especially as an in-state applicant. My stats are 3.4 overall and science and 21/21/17 DAT.

isn't it a bad deal for us Wisconsin residents??!! our state school is a whack private school. What would it take for UW-madison to get a dental school. sheeesh.

For UW-Madison to get a dental school would be awesome. Personally, I would be really excited. Maybe we should all write letters or something.. (just kidding, but seriously.. it would be nice)

Wait a minute, no offense, but you got accepted to UOP and you're complaining??!?!?! Come on now, you should feel sooo relieved. Congrats and God willing we will all be in your place very soon.

Hope fully january will be our month then chaps.

hey umdeeman great avatar. I wish I found that earlier to go with my signature.

All lot of stellar canadates on the hold list. hmmmmmmm

HD

i'm on the "on hold" list also, an outer stater, have not been offered an interview- what does that mean, what are my chances?

Ok people...I will try to shed some light on what I learned when I called Marquette (by the way if you are curious call the school...they are there to answer our questions...dont be nervous to do so...and please please please dont rely just on what people on the forum say). From what I gather...it sounds like the 55 out of state acceptances (out of state acceptances) + 40 or so in state were sent out. The out of staters can expect some movement, the in staters probably shouldnt (maybe 1-5 people from WI will drop their acceptance...thats just a guess). Going by what I was told, MU's percentage of those who put down a deposit (not necessarily go there) is pretty high (out of state) so they usually only have to give out 20 more (give or take a few) acceptances after January 15th. I was told they pick from those interviewed and those who were not interviewed. Seeing that there are 900-1000 of us total on hold, I am going to assume those who were interviewed have an advantage. In terms of interviews, they may give out a few more, but ultimately decision day will come around January 17th and like I said 15-20 acceptances (approximately) will be sent out. I am going to go out on a limb and say there will still be spots open after the 2nd round of acceptances is sent out. At that point they will probably interview more people (very few). Its basically a supply and demand type of situation and it depends on who accepts their acceptance and who turns it down (puts down deposit money...not indicative necessarily of who ends up going there). The waitlist moved 4 spots last year. They are a very in demand school because it is a brand new dental school, they offer less spots than most privates, they charge a little bit less than the average private school, and finally it is inexpensive to live in Milwaukee. Realistically, we the out of staters are competing for 40 spots out of 80...which makes it that much more competitive. Lets all try to be patient and see what happens.

thank you very much bullfan16 for clearing that up

only 40 spots for in-staters?? geez, we wisconsinites sure get the shaft. we need a public d-school here in wisco. 😱

Oh yeah I almost forgot...the first round of acceptances they overshoot their acceptances...I think they gave out 96 acceptances for 80 spots (as all schools do) because they realize that not everyone will put down $750. The second round is nearly exact...meaning if 20 out of 40 put down a deposit for out of state spots....they will offer 20 spots for the 2nd round.

I would imagine that all of the extra acceptances sent out on Dec. 1st are for out of staters. That would come out to 56 out of state acceptances for 40 spots.

marquette is one of the schools doesnt require an interview for out of staters. (the other one is creighton). last year, they put me on waitlist around feb and asked for $750 deposit. i declined that bcos i got in somewhere else.

not sure if anything changes this year. as far as i know, marquette gets a new clinic that looks really good. definitely a place to check out, if u dont mind the cold.

so, david, have u made up ur decision yet? mich or Arizona or marquette?

Marquette has one of the most technologically advanced dental schools in the US (opened 2 years ago). Go there...no hands down.

the only things i saw at marquette that i didn't like were that the staff I encountered didn't seem very friendly, our student tour guide said they didn't like it there, and that students have to pay the difference if their patients decide not to pay after work has been done.

That is odd because when I visited for my interview, I had a completely different experience. The staff seemed very friendly compared to other schools interviewed at. Also, the students who did my tour both loved the school and the one couldn’t stop talking about how great the new facilities were. As far as students having to pay for the procedures that their patients don't pay....I never heard anything about that. That would suck. I wonder if other schools have that same policy?

The quility of the students is not as a good as other schools.

I'm talking about quality of education, facilities, and faculty. Just because a school may lack the prestige of some of the east and west coast schools does not mean that they do not offer high quality dental education or produce first-rate dentists. Also, the midwest is probably not the most sought after location to attend dental school. Grades alone do not make a good dentist.

Please clarify what you mean????

i'd say they are a huge chunk though. having good grades not only shows intelligence and the "mental horsepower" to be a doctor and run an office, it also shows maturity and the ability to prioritize and get things done both in dental school and as a dentist. this is a generalization of course and i realize doesn't apply to absolutely everyone. you also have to have good communication skills and all that, but I think it's less important than grades as far as applying to school.
