Hi!
Could anyone look at my stats and tell me what my chances of getting into the pre-dental scholars program at Marquette are? I'm in a very good spot with Dartmouth and their admissions, but the price of that school is a little bit tough to justify for me, especially if I want to do dentistry in grad school. Here are my stats:

SAT I (Practice grades)
Verbal 650
Math 700
Writing 690

SATII
Biology M 730
US History 660

AP
US History- 5
Biology- 5

ACT (From practice tests)
English 33
Math 31
Reading 33
Science 32

My senior year courses are also the hardest I can take at the school and I have a bunch of honors and some AP classes (All honors and AP senior year except pottery, also with the Matteo Ricci program). My accumulative is a 3.82, with my most challenging year finishing with a 3.92. My science GPA is a 3.89.

My extracurricular stuff looks like this - 18 hours of rowing a week, high scoring in that (6th at nationals, 2nd at Head of the Charles), about 200 service hours and those are extremely varied (therapeutic riding, food bank, a camp for handicapped kids, local parish, retirement home), as well as being on the recruiting team at school and placing at state (3rd) freshman year.

Contact them early and let them know you are interested. If your actual test scores end up as good as your practice you will be in great shape.

I'm assuming you aren't from Wisconsin or the nearby Midwest, and Marquette likes that because they try to recruit exceptional students from far away into the pre-dental scholar program. The reason being is it is easier to capture great students with the accelerated program than it is when these students graduate and have an option of going to any dental school of their choice.

High School... wow... it has been so long that I don't even know what those numbers mean anymore 😳

lol.......

Food for thought.
You are trying to apply to a predental program without having any dental experience? That made me go, "Hmmm"

Go to an undergrad with a dental school. At least then you'll have one school who might look at you favorably. Aka, forget about Dartmouth 🙂.

Thanks guys, especially Strongholder. The thing that's drawing me to Dartmouth is the coach support, but my AP bio teacher is a Marquette alumn and finished medicine and said I'd enjoy it. Im from the pacific northwest, where we have UW as our health sciences powerhouse. I haven't had direct dental experience because of rowing, but I've talked to a few local dentists and orthodontists about pursuing dentistry and they said that I'm a great fit for it. The practice test scores have been consistent and I'm confident I could do it on the real test. I also emailed a local dentist from Marquette and am going to try to meet with him. I already emailed Marquette about the program explaining my interest and situation. And mods, sorry but I didn't see the sticky on my iPod. Oh and one last thing to add to the list above: I'm a first generation Polish American and my first language was Polish. That's my diversity part of applications. Thank you all who have posted and future posters.

The Marquette Predental Scholars program is a program that I too inquired about because Marquette School of Dentistry accepts 40 instate and 40 out of state students every year. I wanted to know my chances of getting in to the dental school starting in 2012. I called to find out how many predental scholar students are instate students. What I was told that of those in the program on track to enter the dental school in 2012, 7 of the students are residents of Wisconsin. Each year the program holds 15-20ish students. As you can surely see, the stress of the whole trying to get into dental school process is a lot. If you do the Marquette program you will not have to worry about 3 years from now. If you maintain your grades
Marquette is not the only school with a predental program. University of the Pacific has a Predental program that can go from high school to dentist after only 5 years of college/dental school. Sadly however, it is not guaranteed the way the Marquette program is. I think you should be alright with Marquette's program, your Highschool test scores look solid enough... use your ACT scores, they are much more impressive sounding.
Do not be discouraged. If it becomes time to go to dental school and you no longer want to... You don't have go to Marquette, and you don't have to go to dental school at all. You still would have a great degree from a great school that would translate into some job opportunities.

There are many similar programs at other schools. Don't hesitate to call them. They love to help.

Cheers and g'luck.

i'd do a couple of SAT practice tests if i were you (dont waste any money on a course)

For your own sake, get out there and see it with your own eyes and if possible, get a feel for it with your own hands.

Yup, since Marquette doesnt need SAT IIs I'll probably just send in my ACT scores in, even though I don't want to miss out on using my Biology score, but there's always AP tests. I've also though about U of P or Case Western or even SUNY Buffalo with accelerated dentistry, but Marquette seems most attractive to me since I've heard so many good things about it from people I know.

With the job shadowing and work experience, I'm going to get into doing that after the crew seasons over in November this fall and try to go after school. I was going to do it this summer but it was a super busy vacation with two online classes (including physics), ACT and SAT prep, summer homework, college apps, workouts, trips, and doing peoples senior pictures (that's about everything 🙂 ).

One more thing. Here's my scores from my last practice test:

English: 32
Math: 31
Reading: 35
Science: 36
Composite: 34

What do you guys think about this program compared to going to UW (Washington) and trying to make their dental school or McGill? I'm a Canadian citizen, so McGill is a really good price for a good education. I could also look at Toronto or UBC, but montreal is an interesting city.

I have a few friends in the program and they all love it. Marquette is a great school and if possible I would try to visit and set up a meeting with Brian Trecek who is the Director of admissions for both the PreDental Scholars program and the Dental School. He is the nicest and most straight forward guy you will meet. Definitely a tell it how it is type person which I think is great. They love to know that you are actually committed and most of all they want to know that you are actually in love with dentistry. They take 20 students into the program a year and they don't want to waist a spot on someone who is going to drop out. So get some experience under your belt and make a visit out there. I know from personal experience that your stats are high enough to make the program; now its just about showing that you are actually passionate about dentistry. Milwaukee is a great city (GO BREWERS!) and marquette is a pretty cool campus. If you know you want to do dentistry then the Scholars program is a great way to get thru your undergrad in 3 years and right into dental school.

Dentalbadger, thanks for the post. I've been told to contact Mr Trecek by another member on here as well, so I'll get on that as soon as I get home from Poland on Monday. I already have an orthodontist and general dentist that I'll be shadowing this fall, and I'm trying to get in touch with an endodontist and prosthodontist. (Everett, WA if anyone can help). From why I've read and had conversations about, dentistry seems like the best career choice for me. I think the shadowing experience will support this.

ACT scores will be up tonight! I'll let you guys know how I did. I also just visited Dartmouth and even though I loved the school and the people, I don't think I'll be able to afford it. Right now I think my top two choices are McGill and Marquette, both of which have their own strengths and weaknesses. What do you think about those and their prep for dental school?

Okay so my scores are 31 all over- way more balanced than I expected.
