Hey all,
So my little brother just got accepted to both Marquette and Iowa, but can't make a decison, and I, being a student at a different medical school, have little to no advice for him. Throwing tuition out of the window, can anyone give me a little advice on what drew you (if you attend either of these) to the school and what is good and bad about the school? ex. specialty opportunities, curriculum, board scores, etc. Any advice I could give him would be awesome! Thanks!

I can't speak for Marquette but I can speak for Iowa. I have heard that graduates from Iowa get more clinical experience with oral surgery and endo than some schools--but I don't know about Marquette per se. If he chooses Iowa, he will extract a lot of teeth, he will do molar endo, a lot of fixed and removable pros, more perio than any sane person would ever want to do, a fairly healthy pedo rotation, a smidgen of ortho that doesn't count for much, and a very nice education in aesthetic dentistry. I had a classmate who interviewed in Minneapolis and was chosen because of all of his surgery experience which other doctors at his place of employment (not Iowa graduates) simply didn't have. Because they did not have the surgery background, they did not want to do surgery in practice. To me, that would be something I would want to investigate before choosing a school. He should pick a school that has a healthy exposure to all of the specialties, because one doesn't know until trying for himself, what areas he might like. A person wouldn't want to close any doors. I feel like at Iowa, if there is a particular area you like, there is ample opportunity to do as much of that as you like, and there are lots of research opportunities as well--in any area. Good luck to your brother, whatever he decides.
