Hi,
Maybe somebody else in the same situation. I have a newborn baby, he is 5 months old. 😍Despite it I took DAT in June and got better scores than first time 2 years ago. I am not sure if it looks good on application that I have a baby. Never thought I would hide it, but some people told me that having a baby is a minus for application.🙁 So I wrote per. statement without mentioning that I am married and have a baby. But I am not sure about secondaries....

Wow, congrats with the new baby. That's awesome. Don't think of it as a disadvantage when you present it in your secondaries. Good luck to you and your spouse!

Cheers.

I included it my personal statement and used it as a plus. I don't know if you are in school but if you are you could say that you were able to excel in school and on the DAT while still having family responsibilities, job, etc. This show you are capable of managing your time and that is super important in D school. Good job, congrats on the new addition to the family and good luck in your app. process.

i definately included it in my application. Those people that do not have a child can not comprehend how much time they demand out of your schedule. Not to mention less sleeping time. Having kids is great. I feel bad for those that are waiting till after dental school to have kids because they are going to be old empty nesters. I couldn't imagine having my first child in dental school. I feel bad for those that do.

I couldn't imagine how balancing the responsibilities of parenthood and performing well on your exam could be construed as anything other than great.

I don't have children yet, but am engaged. I mentioned it in my personal statement, only because I believe the personal ties that bind me to people in my life has made me more socially conscious and empathic to others.

i wrote about my three children from three baby mothers. i was told that it shows that the busy environment of a clinic would be relatively easy for me.. and that people like me

I don't think it is a disadvantage at all. There are several married students in my class, and some with not only one, but two kids. One of my classmates and his wife had their second child a week before school started, and a classmate of mine is due in 4 weeks with her second child.

YOU TOLD ME YOU'D NEVER LEAVE ME 😡😡

I, personally, would absolutely never have a newborn while going through dental school. Unless you have a spouse that's basically doing nothing but taking care of the newborn, I'd say it's like going through dental school and medical school at the same time. 🙁 Of course it's possible, but ****, why put yourself through it. I guess you have no choice, though, huh? Sorry for my pessimism, but daaamn I wish you the best.

Conrats on your new baby. I think you should be proud of yourself to do all the job together.

My suggestion is to ensure them on your interview that you have sombody (mother or mother in Law ) who is watching your baby when you are in school.
good luck

Wow, you guys are amazing. I can barely handle school.

I have situation somewhat similar to the OP's. I don't have any children, but I am married. My husband is in the military and is stationed overseas and won't be home until some time next year. He will then likely be going overseas multiple times while I am in dental school. My question is whether or not to bring up that he is in the military and overseas (which is something that I would bring up in a question such as "tell me about yourself"). I think it is something similar to the applicants that have children because it may be percieved as a distraction. Although, it could also be percieved as a strength. Who knows?? I think it depends on the interviewer. What do you guys think?

Thank you a lot for you answers!!! I decided to write in secondaries about my family. After all it depends on how to spin it. 😉

About last reply - I am not sure how it can be disadvantage.

There is no reason to feel anything but pride in your essay and interview. Many of my fellow students who are parents consider it a huge advantage to have kids because you learn not to take dental school too seriously. I would love such a cute distraction to lessen my stress. Best of luck 🙂

Include it. Schools will see that you are in a situation where you cannot drop from school without having your newborn infant suffer so they like that. Adcoms are joyed when they have a mother or father interview because they will most likely take D school very seriously.

i agree TWN. it can only show that you are able to manage your time, have a strong sense of commitment, and have a life outside of school. my wife and i just had our first baby 4 weeks ago. he's Awesome! we will likely have 3 kids by the time i graduate dental school. my wife is more than happy to stay at home and take care of them, and she does a sweet job at it. we might have to take out a few more loans than others, but its all worth it.

and yes, it IS all in the way you spin it. if all you can talk about regarding your newborn is the fact that you don't sleep and feel like a zombie all the time, you might not make the best impression.
