Heyo all,

Just got in to UIUC. Still have one school to hear back from (my IS), but I figure it's worth looking in to this now. =)

I'll be headed out there with my brand new hubby (we're getting married a week before classes start - oh jeez), and I'd love to hear some recommendations on where to live. We'd like to live alone (I mean let's be serious, NO ONE wants to live with a freshly married couple 😉 ), and I know UIUC offers limited married student housing. Is it worth it? Or will I want a more animal-friendly apartment (I have a rabbit right now, but lord knows I'm gonna pick up at least one other four-legged creature while I'm out there...)? What are some good places? Ideally quieter ones (I don't want to have to be the crochety old lady that's always breaking up the undergrad throw-downs), and anything that can save us some cash is a good thing.

Also. Regarding residency. My husband will (eventually) be employed in the state of Illinois, and not a student, himself. Would that earn us residency after a year, or are there other hoops we have to jump through? Am I locked in to OOS tuition rates for all four years or can I change it later on?

Sorry this is a little disjointed, I just can't believe I'm even typing this. =)

Thanks for your help!

Congrats on your acceptance!

My husband and I ended up buying a house when I first decided I want to switch careers and go to Vet School. Because prices are so low (and even lower now than when we purchased) that we would break even versus rent before I would be done with school. Not sure if you would break even in 4 years, but maybe something to look into.

A lot of students (married and not) rent off campus. A lot of the on-campus apartments are not pet friendly and can get noisy due to the undergrads. There are many apartment complexes that you can look into. I would check out ones in Southern Urbana and Champaign, as well as in Savoy. There are also quite a few houses for rent at reasonable rates. Those are more likely to have fenced yards and pet-friendly landlords.

If you end up deciding to come here send me a PM and I will be happy to get you more info.

Let me know if you have other questions!

Edit: Sorry - forgot to discuss the residency issue.

Yes, if your husband works full-time, then you can apply for residency in a year. You'll need to change your driver's licence and a few other minor things, but the employment is the major requirement.

Thank you so much for the information! Waiting to hear back from VMRCVM but I'll definitely get in touch if we end up moving out to Illinois. =)
