I'm going to be a first year at Maryland next year though I'm still a bit concerned about safety. I've heard Federal Hill was nice but it still seemed a bit shady, i.e. i wouldnt walk around there at night, am I being paranoid or is that accurate? Anyhow, any suggestions?

I’m not sure there is a nicer neighborhood in Baltimore than Federal Hill. However, it is still the city so precautions must be taken. If you were really uncomfortable there than I think your only option is the suburbs, Columbia or Howard County.

I agree Federal Hill seemed pretty nice, however, say for example I need to study kinda late at the dental school/library or I was going to work out at the school in the evening, etc., etc. My impression is that parking is limited wherever you are so would parking right out the front the school be possible or am i going to have to park in some alley. Which also relates to federal hill, can people usually get a spot like in front of their house or do you usually just have to park in a garage further away. People say avoid walking alone at night, use common sense and whatnot, but it seems like it may be unavoidable at times.
Thanks for any input

Parking can be a problem the campus has a garage and security I would try and find a place in Federal Hill with parking also. There are always cabs.

Try Roland Ridge apartments. Ample parking, safe neighborhood, clean and spacious apartments, cheap rent, only 15 min. from school by car. I paid like 600 for a single and it was around 700 for a double. A lot of Hopkins and UMD people live here.

A friend of mine told me that Maryland is a bad school. I also heard that the school is located in a bad area of Baltimore.

Yeah your “friend” is absolutely right. Maryland is the worst dental school in the world. It sucks so bad that none of the students even pass the first part of their boards. That may be because none of them even survive the first year of school because of how bad the area is. It’s amazing they’ve been around for 166 years and have yet to graduate their first student. My friend said last year half the class was shot and killed during orientation. Clearly you don’t know anything about either the school or the neighborhood. If you have something useful to say please contribute otherwise shut the fu(k up.

I just got a contract on a place in Reisterstown. I decided I wasn't going to be comfortable in the city 24/7, but I didn't want to waste time in the car everyday. Reisterstown is right next to Owings Mills which is the last stop on the metro. It's just a 30 minute ride in, that I'm going to use to study (in theory). Students also get a deal on monthly passes, and you save big on parking.

If you start to broaden your search a few miles out of the beltway, you might consider areas near a metro or light rail stop. Hunt Valley is a particularly nice option far out on the light rail.

You should really run that by steve's friend first, though.

You took the words right out of my mouth! 👍

Baltimore is a city like any other city. You need to be careful at night but don't be too paranoid. Federal Hill is a great neighborhood. In addition, check out Mt. Vernon (3 stops away from UMAB on the light rail, i.e. no parking worries), Canton, And Charles Village. All of the aforementioned places are great. If you have the chane get the City Paper for Balto. This will have listings from private landlords as oppossed to apt. building companies and you can often find some great deals. I could be a bit biased seeing as that I have lived in Balto. for the past six years, but if is not nearly as ghetto as out-of twners would oftenhave you think.

I have to agree. I've only been living in the city for 3 weeks now but it's definitely not as bad as I thought it would be. I walk all around during the day without any problems and at night, I take my car.

If you want to live within walking distance of the school, my suggestion would be to live either in the Charles Towers or Park Charles. They are 2 apt. complexes on Charles St. right next to each other. I'm in Charles Towers and it's a terrific deal: Utilities are included in the rent, and I have a HUGE apartment and it is actually the cheapest rent I could find in the downtown area. It's in a nice area of town (in the "financial district" and near the Inner Harbor)... it's close enough to walk to school but far enough away so you won't feel like you're stuck in the same neighborhood 24/7. I wouldn't walk to and from school at night, but both apt. complexes have ample parking in garages right underneath the buildings and it's my understanding that school has plenty of parking as well. And if you REALLY don't want to take your car, both apt. complexes have a free shuttle that runs M-F every morning and every evening for free. The shuttle stops right outside the apt. and 20 minutes later, right at the d-school/med school.

Im about to graduate from UMaryland. I have lived downtown for 4 years. The first year I lived in Marlboro Classic Apartments but then I wanted to decrease rent expenses so I moved (with other students) into a row house (Ridgley's Delight - 2 blocks from Orioles Park). I walk to and from school every day and have never had a problem. You just need to be aware of your surroundings. Also, the campus van can pick you up and take you anywhere around campus.

I am a commuter. I live toward Towson and commute takes about 20 min, door to door is about 30 min. I like living off campus because I like to have my car and to be honest, there is not that much in bmore..for me at least. UMB is a great school, very diverse and it is like any city but not in other ways. Depending on how you were brought up, this city might be suitable for you or it may not. I know people who live off and in the city. There are pros and cons but that really depends on your personality. I do not think there is an advantage vs disadvantage living in the city or suburb. However, I do have to admit that it would be pretty sweet to roll off bed an hr before class if you're living in the city. Parking "can" be a hassle but I can tell you that if thye don't change the schedule, you'll have class 8-5pm m-w-fri and 8-1pm tu-thurs. You don't always run straight through but most likely will in the beginning of the school year.

OUr faculty are great! Yes, there are some "not so good" ones just like any other school but as a whole, it's great. AND, our new building is done so we'll be moving there. WOOT!!!

hope this helps

You can live in an apartment/row house in downtown Baltimore near the school and be fine. You have to take precautions especially at night. I'd suggest not taking long walks at night on the other side of MLK looking like a lost frightened puppy 😉

The area around UMB does look scary but a lot of places in Baltimore are. The apartment buildings around campus are all fairly safe and are secured buildings. Ridgely's Delight is also a pretty safe place to live, from what I've heard, but you might get your car broken into a few times if it's parked out on the street. If you are not an urbanite and don't mind a 30min communite then I'd suggest checking out the suburbs to the north and west which have decent public transportation to downtown Baltimore (i.e. Ownings Mills, Reisterstown, Cockeysville, Hunt Valley, Lutherville, Timonium, and Towson). An area to live within the city that is fairly nice is Roland Park or the Homewood area around Johns Hopkins University but you will need to drive to UMB.

They haven't given us an official date yet, but they're on track to move in July. Pre-clinical is still going to be in the old building until October 1st (that's when they're getting the pre-clinical equipment in), but that won't really affect the first years much since you'll be doing tooth wax-ups initially, which won't require anything more than a bunsen burner and waxing tools. When you actually start spending a significant amount of time in the labs, all the new equipment should be in.

My friend lives about 30 min from baltimore in a little town called Perryville, by Harve de Grace. its really nice there and hes about 5 min from the interstate. cheeeap as hell too, in comparison to nj at least. im sure baltimore would be more expensive than a suburb off of the interstate.
