General: Interested in living in MD or VA after completing residency.
All over the place for speciality: could see Infectious disease, PM&R, EM. Definitely not trying to do: OB/GYN or Surgery
Not sure if I want to do academic medicine but, it is something I could see myself doing.
I would like to continue to do research in med school, with a focus on Behavioral Health/Community Health.

UMD

Pros
-Switching to P/F next year and tiered P/F for clinicals
-$$$$ In-state tuition and 80% tuition covered via scholarship, with potential for full once FinAid is released. (Right now this is equivalent to saving $150k)
-Really vibed with the faculty and students on my interview day
-My entire family lives in MD, but I have gone long periods of time without seeing them
-Hospital is a referral center from a large area with a lot of people in need – will get good clinical exposure to everything
-Good clinical training rep?
-Match list has people matching in all specialties, good for me cuz idk what I want to do yet
-Housing is relatively cheap, just expensive to park my car
-SO is interested in going to UMB Law school at some point

Cons
-Don’t want to live in Baltimore, I have lived in MD my entire life and want a change of scene for a bit
-New curriculum for my year, there may be kinks (but they have flexibility to alter in response to change in STEP scoring)
-Students may not match as well as Brown?? I think if I were shooting for T20 match, I wouldn’t want to be in NE area because it’s cold and MD students seem to match okay at Hopkins/more southern T20 schools.

Brown

Pros
-Match List is fireeee
-Only medical school in RI so there is ample opportunity for students to shadow and get involved in the community
-Focus of social justice which is a topic I hope to continue to explore
-Students seemed close knit and not super competitive with one another
-All of the clinical locations are super close to the school
-Seems to have a lot of research opportunities??
-I like PVD as a city and could see myself living there
-Pretty good PD ranking and I would prob be v likely to match T20

Cons
-EXPENSIVE
-It is cold & I am a wimp
-Moving would definitely be a pain
-May be hard for my SO to find a job during their gap year(s)

If you want to be in Maryland or Virginia after residency, keep in mind that a lot of people end up practicing where they do residency/fellowship. Both Maryland and Brown are highly regarded (see program director ratings here). I would see if Brown will help you out financially, but the 80% scholarship to UMD would be very tempting to me. I don't think you'll be at a disadvantage if you chose UMD > Brown but ultimately the choice is yours 🙂

Brown and Maryland are roughly the same when it comes to reputation (with Brown having more lay-prestige). I would go with the money. Prestige is the same to the people who matter.

Try to get Brown to match if not take the money and run

Is it only appropriate to ask for a direct Aid awarded match? or is it possible to see if they match percent of tuition covered?

I haven't tried to get schools to match aid yet but I would just be forthcoming with them and say $ is a huge determinant in where you go and you really liked their school for X, Y, and Z reasons and you would like to know if there is any assistance that the scholarship committee may choose to provide that would allow you to wholeheartedly commit to matriculate at Brown
