Marymount, UNC, USC

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied to Marymount. PTCAS mailed my apps Nov 21st and I haven't heard yet... Goodluck!

I applied to Marymount and USC. PTCAS mailed my app on 11/17. Haven't heard from either yet. I will let you know when I do.

I attended an info session last month, and Marymount conducts interviews at the end of January, so expect an invitation at the beginning of January. Letters of acceptance and rejection go out in February.

Thanks NewTestament. I was starting to get worried. I submitted PTCAS back in September and still haven't heard anything from Marymount except that they received my stuff.

I just got an email from Marymount today inviting me to the interview day on Sat. Jan 28th. Has anyone interviewed there before or going to be there Jan 28th?

I received an email today as well for an interview on jan 28, so I will be there then!

Congrats to those with Marymount interviews. I'm still waiting to hear from them. Hopefully I'll get something soon.

I got an email from Marymount today too. See you guys Jan. 28th!

I got an interview request for the 28th, too! Good luck everyone.

I got offered an interview as well. Haven't decided if I will attend or not.

For those who got invited to interviews at Marymount, when did you submit your PTCAS application?

I submitted PTCAS on September 2 and it was mailed out a couple weeks later.

For those that attended...what did you think of Marymount's interview day? The school?

They really surprised us with the tutorial model of learning. I wasn't expecting two professors watch me interact with a bunch of people I'd never met before. That didn't favor passive candidates.

The interview was the fastest once I've ever done. Prof. Gilbert just asked one question after another. She was clearing adhering to a strict schedule. You had no time for verbal pauses or critical thinking, and you had to answer fast.

I think three and a half hours was plenty of time to see the facility, which Dr. Ries admitted isn't fantastic. The ugly blue abomination is slated for destruction in 2014 or 2015. The labs and lectures are fine though and the all the students there seemed enthusiastic.

Did you hear Dr. Ries say they received 800 applications this year? They interviewed 220 but accepts 36, which means, sadly, that five out of every six applicants you saw there will get rejected.

The building is old, but the program is stellar. It has a perfect pass rate, nationally-recognized faculty, and great affiliations in the Washington, D.C. area. The only problem is the expense ($88k). "We're not the cheapest school," admitted Dr. Ries. That's for sure.

Kevin

I agree with what you said, Kevin. I really enjoyed the area and wouldn't mind living there for the next three years. Obviously I need to wait before I jump to conclusions on if I'm going there, but it is sooo expensive! It is sort of frustrating to know tuition alone is that much and the how the facilities are.

I've heard from USC - accepted. I toured the campus last Monday the 23rd and they are trying to collect the accepted spots from students they accepted. They are planning to do another round of acceptances after they get a gage on how many are going to actually go so stay hopeful!

For those of you looking into attending Marymount, think long and hard about the COL in D.C./Northern VA. I've lived in Northern VA my entire life and it is expensive as crap to live here. A 1 bedroom apartment in Arlington will easily run you $1500-2300 depending on location (and it only goes up from there) and you will definitely want to live near the school as traffic in this area SUCKS. I took some of my pre-requisite courses at Marymount over the past year and I live in Manassas, which is just 25 miles from Marymount's main campus and it took me 2 hours each way every day. Rush hour is an all day thing as there is tons of construction going on on 495 and 66 (our major highways).

I didn't apply to Marymount's program even though that was my original plan, just because I want a break from Northern VA (but its not like I'm going to the cheapest possible school), but I currently work with a lot of therapists that have graduated from the program (one actually conducted some of the interviews this past weekend) and they are all great therapists with patients who love them dearly. I have nothing but great things to say about them all. Just make sure you really consider that Northern VA has one of the highest COLs in the country before you commit, as you can spend just as much on your living expenses as the school itself in the end.

Good luck to all of you!

I second everything you just said, kcrat21. On top of the COL, you should also be prepared for humidity, expensive public transit, rudeness, poor drivers talking on thier cell phones, lawyers, and a diverse population (not necessarily a bad thing). And yes, traffic here is no joke.

Anyone heard from UNC? Saturday will be two weeks. Ahhh

If I remember correctly, the adcom would not be convening until 2 weeks after the interviews. So they should be meeting about now... I don't expect to hear anything until mid-Feb.

I thought they would let us know within 2 weeks. I could have heard wrong. I had friends last year who heard within a week so the wait is getting to be a lot.

I applied to UNC (and interviewed two weeks ago) and haven't heard anything back yet. if anyone gets a word from them, please post. thanks!

I just got my acceptance letter for Marymount today!

Super job, orinam and shredgnar. Sadly I will not be joining you as Marymount rejected me (not even waitlisted). It's the second school that's interviewed me that has rejected me. Not good.

Anyway, you guys will love Arlington. It's a great place for Generation Y. If you have questions about living in NoVA, PM me.

Kevin

I got accepted to Marymount too. I will probably be going there but still waiting from a few schools.

I wrote that almost five years ago. Marymount has a new building. They razed the old blue building on Fairfax Dr. But even in 2012, the cost of tuition there was close to $100k and now it's probably even more. Arlington is an awesome place for young people but it's not cheap. All of the other problems remain and today it's worse.

@NewTestament where did you wind up going to school for your DPT?

University of Saint Augustine, FL. Great school, great location. Marymount is even more expensive in a more expensive area (Arlington, VA).
