Hi guys,

Am going into 2nd year at a UK medical school and am considering future options. I have heard of people taking a year out of med-school and doing their masters work in that year but not getting their certificate until they complete their original degree. Just wondering if any of you have heard of this career path and if you had any contact suggestions?

Any contributions would be appreciated!

I have no idea how it works in the UK, but in the US it happens quite a bit, although people sometimes get their secondary degree conferred before finishing their MD, although sometimes not. I have seen people do MPH, MS in epidemiology, and MBA. I have also seen people leave their medical school for 1-2 years after their two pre-clinical years to get another degree, and then returning to do their two clinical years.

I don't know what the data/stats are on for this helping to get placed in residency, but I suspect it doesn't help very much, and that is what I've heard from other people.

Therefore, it might make more sense to wait until you are in residency or fellowship. Schools in the US have programs where you can take classes while you are in your "research" part of your residency or fellowship, so it will end up overall taking less time and it is better in that you will be getting paid your residency/fellowship salary, whereas if you leave school now to get another degree, you'll be paying for it yourself and needing to support yourself. Also, by the time you are in fellowship, you may realize you don't want/need another degree, so you will have saved yourself the time and headache.
