hey guys, there's a new masters program starting this fall 2010 at umdnj in new brunswick, nj. you can find it at:
http://rwjms.umdnj.edu/education/gsbs/msbio.html

there's another one in newark that's been there for years. my question is which would be the better option, go to the older one or the new one? advantages and disadvantages of being the pioneer at a new masters program? just to let you know, there's always been a graduate school of biomedical sciences in new brunswick and it's part of umdnj but they used to have only Phd program. now they started a masters program. check it out and let me know what youg guys think. i would truly appreciate your opinions on this. i have to make a decision soon.

dude, the one in brunswick is intended mostly for people trying to get into med school. Seeing as how you're pre-dental why would you go to brunswick. The one in newark clearly looks better of the two and you get a chance to take actual dental courses. I think it's a no brainer...

i was considering new brunswick b/c it's closer to where i live. i was thinking a masters is a masters and both will help. any other thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

If you're pre-dental you go to the MBS program at UMDNJ-Newark. Newark is also the campus that offers dental school classes such as anatomy with the D1s. Can you take the medical anatomy instead? Sure but if dental school is what you're aiming for then taking the class with the D1s and being graded against their curve is a strong statement to your performance if you were accepted into dental school.

There are no advantages to "being a pioneer" at a new Masters program. Take PCOM-GA for example when they started an MBS program to match that of the original PCOM-PA campus. For about 2-3 years, the PCOM-GA MBS students have complained now about how their classes are disorganized and not comparable to the sister program in PA. You aren't just paying money for the UMDNJ name, you're also paying for the reputation of the program that it has established over many years of producing strong candidates for professional programs. Why do you think there is so much commotion over whether to attend UMDNJ Stratsford or Newark? Pre-osteopathic students go to Stratsford as the osteopathic school is there and the allopathic students go to Newark as well as the pre-dental because they offer dental courses over there.

A Masters isn't just a Masters. You can hardly say a Masters of Biomedical Science from Barry University is equivalent to the Masters of Biomedical Science that you get from Tufts or the Masters you obtain from Georgetown SMP in the Adcoms eyes. Not only that, it's not the Masters degree that gets you into dental/medical school, it's your performance inside the program and the reputation of the program itself. Adcoms place added emphasis on your graduate coursework and performance based on the program that you come out of and whether or not they have heard of the school's program and the program itself.

If you are seriously looking at dental SMPs, do yourself a favor and add BU MAMS (oral track), NSU MBS, Midwestern MBS/MA, and Tufts MBS to your list.
