I guess I'd better preface this by saying I'm considering alternatives to the PhD. And I would love to hear from others what opportunities NYC and the surrounding suburbs hold for a masters student. 😛

Haven't seen any more threads about this, so hopefully it will be helpful to more than 1 person.

CUNY, Stonybrook, Fordham... all great PhD programs... how does the masters hold up in comparison (especially as prep for research/publishing opportunities)?

I won't even ask about Columbia and NYU for myself.. 😱😱 But for comparison's sake, lets put them in.

What kind of research opportunities are there? Is it tuition money well spent?

Any funding opportunities out there? 😱 I'm afraid to even ask, as these must be so scarce. Any how, I'll wrap it up for now.

A master's in what? General/experimental, clinical, mental health counseling(the only of these that lead to licensure)? And what do you hope to do with the degree?

I'm interested in the MA as a fallback to applying for PhD programs in clinical psych. No, that doesn't sound enthusiastic enough... Well, the truth: I'm interested in the MA because I would love to actually get an MA for it's own sake. So I'm hoping to get into clinical programs but figure that I'll apply to a few experimental MA programs as a backup.

Many MA/MS programs exist to supplement doctoral funding, so only consider programs that have a strong history of placing students into Ph.D. Programs. Often programs that aren't competing w. a doctoral programs can provide more resources/mentorship to their students, so don't write off smaller programs that lack a doctoral program.
