Master's programs to improve application

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
FIU (Florida International University) has an MPH that is completely online (you need to do an externship but it can be done in your area). It is a very cool program that allows you to specialize in Epidemiology, Disease Prevention, Community Nutrition, and a few other areas.

I was thinking of doing this if I don't get in, or I might do it after I graduate. It just seems like a really cool program and it doesn't hurt to have some extra letters after your name. It opens up a whole area of job possibilites.

If you happen to be a Florida resident, you will qualify for in-state tuition.

Are there any 1-year post-bacc or MS programs (besides Drexel's, because those are damn expensive) that have deadlines after we're due to hear back from schools? I hate this feeling of being in-limbo. My current Plan B involves interning at a large equine specialty practice over the summer, somehow acquiring another vet-related job throughout the fall/spring (perhaps going back to my current research position at Cornell vet), and taking one pre-req course over to improve my grade. However, I still have 5 schools left to hear from, so I'm not giving up yet! It's so stressful not knowing what you're going to be doing come fall, and applying again without any new experience would be somewhat pointless.

Brownie points for knowing of any programs near the NY tri-state area!

I know EXACTLY how you feel! I am just to the point of want to know the news even if it is bad.

Just submitted my FAFSA for NCSU.

I also just want to know if I should take the summer to do some field research, start looking to relocate, or what!

Deadline for applying to CSU Plan B Master's was April 1 in 2008 to begin the program last Fall, so I presume the deadline for this Fall will be right around that same date.

No brownie points for me (sigh).

Sorry about not it being in the NY area, but as a CSU plan B masters student, I will attest to the fact that it is designed to be a program for those people who do not make it in on a particular application cycle. Yes the printed deadline is 4/1, but... Also, I have to say, if you are truly commited to becoming a veterinarian, your family is going to have to make some sacrifices, and vet school must be yout #1 priority. I also am coming from a "big 3" school, so things are different here than they are at the other, more mainstream institutions. However, you have Ithica (Cornell), who is #1 to CSU's #2. Anyhow, a MS does make a difference, I have been told so in confidence by admissions comittee members even if they cannot say so publicly. The big thing is they want to see a record of favorable achievement in like-classes to vet school, and a MS program is a very clear indication of future potential. Also, without being nasty, you imply MULTIPLE less than B grades --- that may well be your problem. A 4.0 in graduate level courses may well rectify past misdeeds, as it did for me.

Caninerepro, when did I say I have multiple less than B grades? I don't, I have a good GPA and that's not holding me back. My undergrad transcript shows I can handle a rigorous courseload at vet school, so I'm not even sure a Masters would help my application much, which is why I'm trying to gather more information. Again, I was told my application is good, and there's no particular reason I wasn't accepted to my IS besides the fact that it is highly competitive. Also, I mentioned staying in the NY tri-state area so I could live at home and reduce costs significantly. Thanks for the CSU Plan B idea though.

I am suprised I havent heard more about MPH programs on here. Esp. considering it seems that numerous vet schools have just started dual degree programs with MPH schools citing a lack of vets in this field. DocDVMD what about the MPH prgrams at NYU, Columbia, UMDNJ?

I am interested in joint MPH programs, but my plan is to attend vet school first before deciding whether I want to apply. I debated a lot over the past few months about whether to apply to the joint programs this application cycle, but I decided to wait and see if my interests change after beginning vet school. Thanks for the ideas LLIPPY!

Anyway, sorry to semi-hijack the thread, but it's always good to have a bunch of possibilities in case any of us (myself, sumstorm, etc) need to look into pursuing a graduate degree before vet school. Thanks everyone for your input.

Hi Doc DVMD

Not a prob. The joint programs are great, but I meant why not an MPH by itself? U of Minnesota has a fabulous online program. They are the ones who do the dual degree with Western CVM now. Many of the schools will let some credits from vet school transfer in or you can delay the masters to do both. Vet schools seem so eager for some of us to have this degree now I dont see why they wouldnt work with you to have both. I guess I am just pushing it because I myself am finishing my application for MPH schools now due at midnight 🙂 . Yea it was last minute! I figured Im just gonna send em out there. I have one more school to hear from after my interview, which is Western...well and Penn but I am not expecting much there!

I kinda feel like right now my whole life has been just applying to schools for the past year!
