I'm just curious. Still figuring out what I need to do. I have no research experience, and am considering getting a Masters first to catch up on stuff I lack (including research!)

However - is research something most Masters programs look for, too? In other words- for those of you here who are getting a masters/have gotten one, did you have research experience going in? How important was it?

It depends on what kind of masters program you are looking for BUT if it helps at all, I got into an MA counseling psych program and an MS clinical psych (practitioner track) program without a spec of research experience outside of taking the standard stats and research methods classes.

In general, MS programs tend to place more emphasis on research and MA programs focus more on the practice of psych, though I'm sure there are exceptions (ie: like the MS program I mentioned...they have a thesis track and a practitioner track).

Before entering my master's program (MA), most of my class had some research experience and some conference experience. My program is also a general MA , which may affect its importance. However, I think limited experience is not necessarily hindering too much, but having at least some experience helps.

Sorry that is a bit vague of a description, but I really am not sure how much different programs emphasize research experience. Good luck!:luck:

Hm, thanks, both you "blind" people! Lol. But yeah...that's what I've gathered. I'd desire to get in a practice-oriented one. But again, I have no research exp. The closest I had to it was taking "comm research"...talking about research methods and all, but with a media/comm slant. Hmm...

most of the people i knew at uni who did a masters did so with coursework. i was the only one i knew of to do a masters by research.

i'm in australia tho
