Hey Everyone,

I'm hoping that someone can share information on the perks/cons of pursuing a research masters versus a course based masters. My end goal is dentistry, but I need to boost up my sci gpa. I was considering a masters of dental science or masters of oral biology. I've done research for the past 6 years and thought that a course based masters might be the answer i.e. up my science gpa and no more research. However, I recently heard that it's much easier to do well in a research based masters. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

this goes for all programs

you get out of it what you put into it

the research program might not be heavily course based, but if you're not getting results for your thesis, your masters project will suffer greatly.

I dont understand why it has to be an either or? Where are you looking at MS programs? I am just finishing my masters in Oral Biology and although it is research based and I have to write/defend my thesis it also had many classes as well which boosted my GPA.

Agree. Most programs that I'm familiar with have a course component either way, about 30 credits usually. In my own experience the research was a welcome addition and helped me as a student greatly. As a previous poster said, it is what you make it. Good luck!

30 credits! that's awesome!
In my MSc program, we must take 6 'modules' for the MSc degree in addition to a thesis. What sucks is that one course consists of 3 modules, which is 3 credits... So essentially, to get my MSc, i will have taken 6 credits. This doesn't help me too much in terms of GPA 🙁
