I am thinking about getting a Master's in Medical Science degree with a concentration in health science. It is 32 credits of all upper level sciences...pathology, pharmacology, biochemistry, anatomy...etc...all are 6000+.

I am a non-trad student, gpa is 3.4 and retaking DAT, good upward trend, ortho asst for 4 yrs, lots of volunteer and community service hours.

Because I scored lower than avg in the pat section, I have not heard anything from schools yet, but I have notified them of a retake.

IF I score higher on the DAT in all sections and STILL do not hear anything, would it be wise to consider this masters program to better my chances??? It does not require a thesis, and its a 1 yr program as I cannot afford to complete a 2yr+ program and being 27 yrs old (graduated with BS in 2011) I am not fond of starting dental school in my early 30's.

Thank you!

It is unlikely that the lack of response has much to do with the "lower than avg in the pat section". You may not be "fond", but then it may not be your choice.

Might help to give a breakdown of your DAT scores?

Might help to give a breakdown of your DAT scores? 3.4 isn't bad at all...

My DAT TS/AA was 17...so only avg and I need to raise it....I should've said in my post that my entire DAT score was lower. I know it def needs to go up. Things happened during study time and I didnt study as i should have.

when did you send out your apps? imo, a 3.4 with like a 19 or 20 would get you in somewhere. if i were you, id retake it sometime next year after studying for 2 months or so and kill it. might take a few upper-level sciences courses at my nearest state uni. and kill those too. reapply for 2013 admission. boom. i envy your gpa, and wish i were in your shoes. for what its worth, it doesnt seem to me like your situation is too bad.

They were complete 9/27, took the dat on 9/3....im retaking in dec. Already planning on reapplying for 2013 even though schools will have my new dat scores for this cycle, just dont think anything will happen this cycle.

I would apply and attend if you get accepted to the master's in the event you don't get into dental school. It will show that you are doing something to improve yourself. You can always leave if you get into dental school. You're GPA isn't bad at all. I'll be turning 27 next week and wanted to be an orthodontist before I was 30, but obviously that's not going to happen. I was an ortho RDA for over six and a half years. I'm currently doing an MBS to raise my gpa and show that dental schools I can handle the curriculum. There is no reason not to do it if you don't get accepted this cycle, and you can keep applying while you're in the master's.

Thats what I was considering doing, since the deadline for the masters is June 2012 to begin in august and I am sure I will know something regarding DS by then. Have you been out of school for awhile?

I graduated spring 2009 from undergrad and took 15 units since last fall, and now I'm in my first semester of the MBS program. I applied a month before the deadline. There's no harm in applying to the master's program, but it sounds like you're in a good place if you improve your DAT scores.
