Albert einstein college of medicine/Yeshiva University is MD institution that are still very anti D.Os especially Einstein/Montefiore. Only departments that DOs can land in their residency is Surgical Prelim, PM&R. I know several DOs in ER in Montefiore program. Peds has only one DO. OBGYN has accepted D.Os as well. Do not waist your time applying IM program at Montefiore, they do not accept DOs PERIOD. Even psychiatry is anti DO.and I am not sure but when my friend did interview at family medicine, she was told that they have not accepted DOs. Anesthesia used to accept DOs but not anymore with new program director. Albert Einstein college of medicine has residency programs(which include montefiore, montefiore Lakefield, Jacobi, Beth Israel; this one might be under Mount sinai since mt sinai bought many hospitals including beth israel) that is second largest residency in the country(the website says 1200 residents and fellows). It is sad but that is just the way it is

This comes directly from higher ups in Med Ed in the Bronx. Back in the late '90's and early Naughts, Monte and St. Barnabas ( which at that time was affiliated with Weill and NYCOM) were in direct competition. During that period Monte was very DO friendly, especially in peds and FM ( IM was warming up). However, after the restructuring of Medicaid managed care, Barnabas broke its affiliation with Weill and affiliated with AECOM (AECOM meds students now rotate on the medicine and geriatric services at Barnabas). Part of the negotiation was that MMC -Moses would not poach any potential residents from Barnabas. Thus, MMCs current refusal to take DOs in IM and FM. MMC will readily take DOs in prelim Surgery, OBG and PMR ( Barnabas does not have residency programs in OBG and PMR) MMC -Moses will NOT take DOs in FM, IM and categorical Surg ( residencies that Barnabas has). MMC -Moses will take DO ped residents since Barnabas' program is ( and always was) ACGME and was affiliated with Weill.

I've heard a lot of people are upset about Dcom's match list...it seems pretty good to me...maybe someone from there can elaborate?

This was the make up of this particular class. Didn't have many folks interested in surgery. Big IM focus, as you see above. Had a ton interested in EM, most of which matched. Two ortho (didn't have many interested in this field), optho, one urological surgery, ENT, 7 ACGME EM + 10 AOA programs, Shands IM, great PM&R matches, an MCG ACGME Gen Surg match, 5 strong pathology matches, just to name a few. And the great majority of the class matched into programs where they wanted to go. Remember, this is DCOM's fourth graduating class. If you take that into account and look at this match list, there's definitely nothing to be upset about.

I agree. They seem to have a pretty solid success rate in the specialties I'm interested in. i figured it was more interest-based than whether they matched just because of only 2 peds matches (unless people ranked ridiculously out of their range or something). phew. Just wanted to hear it from someone that's more knowledgeable; you know how the younger classes talk all doom and gloom, especially towards the end of the year/close to boards. thanks!

Not to mention it's unknown what some of those Traditional Rotating Internships are doing. Some of those could be surgical subspecialties.

I know of a folks failing to match into PMR as well as EM for example. Also I know of folks failing to match into gen surg too. A lot of this was from folks either under applying or those that had unrealistic expectations in my opinion.

There were people who failed to match in just about every single specialty on that list, which happens at every school. But, what I want people to know is that this list matches the interests of this class. There is nothing anyone should be mad or disappointed about.

Yeaaaaaa.... that's pretty unlikely. Really really unlikely. But it doesn't mean they couldnt *in the future.*

Those TRIs are doing TRI. Notice PM&R, pathology, radiology, and anesthesia were listed as their own thing.
 
TRI is used for many things, including neurology, derm, PMR, etc. In neuro for example, half the programs are categorical and the other half do a TRI/medicine year. So they'd list the categoricals under "neurology" and the others who wanted neuro were listed under TRI. If PMR is set up the same, then I could see the same thing happening there. We can't assume all those TRIs are people who didn't match.
 
One of our Rowan SOM grads did match Montefiore IM so it is possible. Our match list is on our site, click for students, most of the way down on right side. We had 5 ortho matches, 10+ EM and 3 EM-IM, etc

Agreed. I just hope people get more realistic when attempting to match. I think that would have cut down on some of the failed matches.
 
FYI the ones lumped together as Rowan are often 2 separate residencies (ie Rowan Kennedy/OLOL is our EM program, Rowan Inspira is Vinelands new EM program using our OPTI. Just FYI. And the OB match one is at Georgetown. I'm proud of my class, I think we did well, 15 EM, 3 EM/IM, 8 PM&R, etc.

That scares me since I'm pretty interested in EM. it was ACGME that they failed to match into?

We matched 17 people into EM spots for goodness sake...compare that to other match lists posted here. That's 12% of the class. What's there to be paranoid about? If you've done well in class, do well on boards, do well on your auditions, apply broadly, and interview well, you have nothing to worry about. Relax...

True up to a certain point. If someone told me to be "realistic" about the match, I wouldn't have matched where I did. Sometimes you have to go with your gut.

We will have to just disagree then because those same people that failed to match "went with their gut" as well. Sometimes people get lucky(or unlucky).

Those that failed to match that I know of personally are ACGME but I would bet a few are AOA. Since I matched osteopathically I can't give a whole lot of advice besides taking the USMLE is important now.

If you don't it's still possible to match at an ACGME program with a comlex score but harder(I got 11 total invites from the acgme side with comlex only and assume I would have matched because two of the places didn't fill with one of those places I received a vibe I was on the rank list.)

For the most part I would listen to what DO3 told you.

To preserve anonymity, matched to an ACGME position that wasn't in IM or FM.

It is important to do WELL on USMLE. It isn't enough just to take it and pass it. If you aren't confident that you will do well on USMLE do not take it. It will hurt your app when applying to ACGME programs. You'd be surprised at how many ACGME programs in many specialties will accept only the COMLEX if you did well on it.

Yeah I definitely agree with this advice. I didn't think I'd do well on USMLE, so I didn't take it. I'm pretty thankful for that now because if I would've done poorly, I think I would've shot myself in the foot. I'm applying ob/gyn and there are plenty of programs that accept the COMLEX. And most of the programs that don't accept the COMLEX are the pretty competitive programs that I likely wouldn't have a shot at anyway.

I applied to acgme IM with high comlex scores only and was fine, even at programs that have ~220 cutoffs and average 230 for incoming class, per their websites. Matched my no 1
 
Only one MD ortho program considered the COMLEX in addition to the USMLE when I applied this past year. In fact, one group of interviewers had no idea what the COMLEX even was when I brought it up. That was the last time I even mentioned it during my interviews.

That being said, I would base your decision on your career goals. i.e. there are many programs within certain specialties that accept COMLEX (as have been discussed); however, many other specialties and programs do not.

If you are unsure of your career goals, still study for the USMLE (the board review material geared towards the USMLE is better anyway and overlaps with the material that is represented on the COMLEX) with the aims of taking both COMLEX and USMLE. Take a COUPLE of NBME practice exams to see where you stand before you decide to opt out of taking the USMLE. In the end, it's an exam that is very doable and much more well written and straight forward than the COMLEX is. Don't be scared of it. I saw too many of my classmates and underclassmen underestimate themselves and opt out of taking the USMLE.

Personally, I like to have as many options available to me as possible. In the end, solid USMLE scores in addition to solid COMLEX scores opens doors.

Besides, all you have to do before taking the COMLEX, if you've been studying FA/UWORLD/etc., is do some COMBANK/COMQUEST questions to get yourself used to the style of questions that make up the COMLEX and study Savarese a bit. You will be fine.
