I have a question regarding this link:

Why are the match % so low? What do they mean by non-match (do they apply again next year bc they couldnt find a spot or it wasnt their #1 choice?)

and whats non particpants...

Iam kinda worried about the low % match, at the max we have 50%

you're reading it wrong. it is saying 50 out of 100 people in a class matched into an aoa residency. it isn't saying all 100 people tried to match an aoa residency. the non match rate, which is 12.5%, is more important.

i dont know if i understand this correctly,

so the non participants are those...probably into acgme residencies?? (making the total around 88%)

so non match= didnt match, which is roughly 12%, and will reapply for a position

yea, sort of. the non participants passed on the aoa match but it doesn't mean they necessarily matched an acgme residency. the acgme match rate for do's is about 70%. but you cannot just figure out the non participants and multiple it by 0.70 because there are people who participate in both matches.

those who do not match generally scramble instead of reapplying. in the scramble you call programs with empty spots after the match and see if they will take you.

I have HEARD from people that most non-matches are typically a result of applying too narrow. i.e. You should have applied to more residencies, maybe a bit further away. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

Yeah, you gotta remember that not all DO students go into AOA residencies. I think You gotta have huevos grandes if you're going to skip the AOA match (and try for ACGME) for mid-tier to low-tier residencies like EM, gas, IM, and FM.

Does the non-match include those going into transitional PGY1 year for rads, for example? Or is that part of the "non-participants" column? This isn't a good chart, as it doesn't explain anything, really.

Edit: Although it's fun to look at, I hope NO pre-meds make any matriculation decisions based off the match lists. What you match into has next to no bearing on the school and much more to do with an individual's performances in the COMLEX (and USMLE) as well as the work you put into it. The schools are there to help you, but it's up to you to make it happen.

I think he just mispoke. you'd be crazy to pass on the aoa match if you wanted any surgical specialty.

For most..yes. For the elite..not necessarily.
