Hello all,

I have just recently found this site and this forum -Great!

I am currently completing my PhD in molecular biology at Karolinska Institute in Sweden. As I am also a MD (and have pretty much decided to specialize in Anesthesiology) I would highly appreciate some guidance on how to go about for a recidency in the US.

I understand the normal procedure would be to take the USMLE 1 and 2 boards and then go through the "match thingy". However, when I am ready to leave Sweden I will probably have about a year and a half of clinical work as an anesthesiologist in my baggage and will be a licenced MD in Sweden. Do I have any alternatives other than having to go through the process as a newly graduate would, which would feel a bit as a step backwords at that point? How could I apply for a position as a slightly more senior MD, go directly in to the latter years of recidency etcetera?

Any advice and explanations about the way to go about will be much appreciated!

Again, thank you for a very nice site and community.

Kind regards,

/Kalle

Hi,

You actually have to have all 3 steps of boards completed and a year of training in the US before you can even apply has an IMG. I am 99% sure his is the case. So if you are serious I would take the USMLE I, II, and III. I would also find out about the year you have to do in the states. Good luck

Check ECFMG.org to find out what is required. I suggest this question moved to the General IMG forum as you would get better advice there.

Steps 1 and 2CK/CS are needed. You have to do one year of internship, either integrated in a categorical program or separate (in the US). This is not a prerequisite to applying though. Oh, yes re USMLE: score HIGH!

Good luck :luck:

Thanks for advice!

I´ll check the International forum as well. I do know people who are employed in the US as specialists directly from Europe. Of course their recidency is completed (not only just started) in Europe though.

Best,

a few summer weeks among Stockholmians. Beautifull nature and architecture. Have you ever visited?
