What's stopping someone from trying to match into Optho/Uro because they have a different system/timeline, AND try to match like normally through ERAS?

Nothing really. Only caveat is let’s say in the main match you’re applying to the usual safety fields for surgical subs (rads, gas) and have multiple optho electives on your ERAS app, which you would need for your optho app. Then the ERAS PDs will know what’s up.

Ahh, you mean like multiple auditions to optho spots.. yeah that can be iffy, I see what you mean.

"I changed my mind" seems to work for these applicants because they are competitive anyways so programs turn a blind eye.

That’s been my anecdotal experience too. Helps the story if the less competitive one is the last rotation before apps go out so the applicant can claim that they saw the light.

Of course I’d never advocate lying on your residency interviews. Especially when PDs are notoriously super truthful toward us.😒
