I wondered on the interview trail how much programs felt the pressure to fill vs us matching
Filled.
Based on our experience, we'd be shocked if we didn't fill, but still a nagging worry in the back of the mind. (Though honestly this year completely driven out by Corona panic.)
Don't feel to sorry for programs, all programs can fill. The ones that don't were either too picky or too confident. As long as there are more unmached applicants than there are positions, we can fill.

True. I have to be honest though at this point I'm just really thankful for getting into psych. My best buddy in med school didn't match into psych and he's obviously crushed

Were there any unfilled positions in psych? I'm guessing from the talk of SOAPing into FP, there aren't many anyway.

Matched! Waiting until Friday will be tough, but I'm just happy knowing I matched.
Matched! Seven interviews, ten contiguous ranks due to some combined fellowship programs.
There were 20 according to the NRMP data. There may have been some more in the way of combination IM/psych and Neuro/psych but I don't remember. I think all triple board filled.
Shout out to psych buddies! I matched as well, though unsure if I matched to Medicine-Psychiatry or Psychiatry at this point. Both programs were pretty high up on my rank list, so here's hoping!
I wish it at least told you which program you matched into for multi-program applicants. It'd be easier for us to get excited! But man, what a feeling!

Congrats to all that matched! For anyone who will be as disappointed on match day as I was when my destination was revealed, I am super happy where I am now (PGY4) and it was probably a much better fit than how I made my rank list. Take a moment (hopefully not the weeks it took me) to be a little sad, then be excited you matched because you are entering an amazing field and do your best to utilize everything your program offers to make you teh best psychiatrist you can be.

Matched! Hoping for my #1 but mostly happy to have a job come July 1.
This year there are 18 slots in the SOAP. 10 in Florida. 5 in New York. 1 each in PA, CA and PR. Not that many, but a lot more than last year.

My bet is programs are interviewing fewer applicants. We cut our interviews from 15 per spot to 10 per spot and ultimately interviewed around 9 per spot with cancellations and filled.
I think at least some of those FL are a new program that wasn't in the Match.
Where can we find this information?

NRMP R3, then options, then reports, then regional match statistics. I think we can see data for specific programs after the soap is over.

Word is that 7 of these slots are from new programs only filling via the SOAP.
Slots are slots. With NYC and Florida passing out positions everyone should be happy. The only question is "are you more comfortable in urban army snow boots or chanklas and a Hawaiian shirt?"
Or would you rather be in Corona hell or Global Warming hell.
I think Florida counts for both, aren’t they at hundreds of cases now?
And I wouldn't be surprised if that number shoots up rapidly with all the Spring Breakers running around.

Psychiatry still “the new dermatology”? I’ve noticed this sort of talk has really died down this year. I remember circa 2017/18 when every other thread was about how psych was becoming impossible to match into lol
The whole derm thing was based on the rate at which applicants fail to match into psych was about equal to that of derm. This is fairly silly because derm applicants and psych applicants are not very similar. five years ago half of our slots were filled with IMGs, now it is about 40%. Trust me we are not derm.
Not sure about this but I I know Gas had only 1 spot left unfilled this year.
You guys are all making me sad that one of my top choices is in Florida
but I will qualify that it is one of the big academic programs so maybe that makes my love of Hawaiian shirts more acceptable?Classmate (US MD) didn’t match after going on 15 interviews. No red flags and had a nice mix of strong academic programs as well as some lower tier community places. Likely didn’t perform well in interviews but really surprised they didn’t match somewhere.

This now the second no red flag USMD I have heard of, though in the case I know of they did not have enough interviews (< 10) and slightly below average scores. Kind of disheartening that home programs don't rank their own students higher. They also received two generic/sent to everyone "you're great we would love to have you" letters from PDs so here is everyone's reminder to trust no one!
Overall, I found DO students to be much more pleasant on my interview trail than MD students. I got to the point where I, without asking, could determine if I was talking to someone from a DO school or MD school. The contrast was kind of insane.

Please don’t take my comment the wrong way - there are many pleasant MD students, of course. However, an MD student without red flags who doesn’t match into psych needs to take a hard look at how they interview and interact with their fellow candidates (which programs take note of).
Oh I definitely noticed some...interesting behaviors in the trail. I don’t really recall what degree programs but it was wild to witness!

I saw the phrase. That's why I made my comment. What's your point?
Devastated. Second from last choice. But at least I matched. I’m just so shocked because I got so much positive feedback from almost all the programs I interviewed with. I guess What they say about never believing program directors is true. I had a great letters, publications in medical school, a PhD. My big weakness was a low Step 1. I guess that’s what got me.
