I am a DO doing a TY and have matched into a PGY2 position through the NRMP match. However I am wishing to switch specialties and will only apply to AOA residences for a different specialties. Is this a match violation?

I believe that you have to at least show up for the first day of your advanced matched and give notice. If your current future PD signs off on it AND the NRMP approves (not a given), that will also let you out of your match.

You are wanting to go through the osteopathic match, though. Other than screwing over your current future PD and violating your contract, is there any other downside to being banned from the NRMP for you? Are your reasons for wanting to switch good enough that you're willing to do this to your current future PD?

Why?

No, it is not a match violation.

If you are currently in a TY (i.e. just started in the last month) and have decided to switch fields, you can apply for a waiver and it will be granted. From the NRMP's site:

An applicant who matched to an advanced position also may request a waiver if the applicant has elected to change specialties, provided the waiver is requested no later than the January 15 prior to the start of training. The applicant must request the waiver in writing and must send the request to the NRMP with a copy to the program to which the applicant matched. The NRMP will investigate the waiver request to determine whether or not the waiver shall be granted.
