Hi! :hello:
So my fiance and I are couples matching (me EM, him FM) so I want to find out if he's still okay for FM. I really have no idea on what FM programs are looking for so forgive me if this seems like a silly post. Here are our stats:

Him:
Rotation grades: all high pass and honors
Class rank: ~50th%
Level 1: 460s
Level 2: fail..will be retaking in december. He barely studied and didn't study OMM so I'm fairly confident he'll pass the 2nd time around
PE: pending scores in a few weeks but should be fine
LORs: strong
Other: He's done quite a few aways and all the programs have told him he has a spot in their program if he wants it. Research in undergrad. Strong volunteer/work/life experience background. He wants to do rural FM so his dream program is honestly one that is unopposed in the middle of nowhere and has like, 3 residents. OB experience would be a huge plus. He's only submitting this week as his LORs just got uploaded. He's applying to ~100 programs

Me:
Rotation grades: all high pass and honors
Class rank: ~90th%
Boards: 700s comlex 1/2, 225 step 1, 261 step 2
PE: pass
SLOEs: no idea but I got 1 honors and 2 HP on the evals
Other: no research, significant work/volunteer experience including EM tech for 4 years, applied to ~60 programs, have 9 interviews so far, 0 rejections so far

We're applying pretty broadly and basically all over the US and are willing to be up to ~3hrs apart. Any input? I'm nervous with the failed board but am I delusional because I'm thinking EM????

You can do FM with failed boards. But he might not get into his dream location.

If it was me and I could stand it I’d drop couples match and just apply broadly.

Sounds like you will carry him. He can definitely still match FM, but it might not be near you. The good 3rd year evals are helping him, but just looking at the numbers you might get the impression that he just slacks off for big tests. Hopefully he has great letters that say otherwise.

He doesn't have a dream location and is basically just applying to FM programs around where I am applying. If it gets to rank time and he got zero interviews near my dream program than we MIGHT consider being farther but honestly dream relationship for life >>>>>>>>> dream residency for 3 years. I don't plan on doing a fellowship or staying in academics so honestly where I train won't matter.

I'm for sure the stronger applicant but he has ties to locations that I don't which can help me have a connection to the area. I'm definitely planning on using those connections when I contact/interview programs! Like I said we are willing to be up to 3hrs apart and with the plethora of FM programs I don't anticipate it will be an issue? On average there are 5-6 programs in a reasonable distance for every 1 of mine. I have seen a couple of the letters/evals and most speak highly on his clinical knowledge and his ability to build rapport with patients and staff. We also did pretty extensive research on the programs he applied to and only included ones that allowed a fail and felt like a good 'fit' for him since I've heard that's important for FM. Stil ended up with ~115 programs
