I know how the match process works for medical school. I was wondering, if I wanted to be in a particular city, is it possible to make that happen by listing choices in that way? What are the most competitive cities for residency? I would like to be in New York and am interested in surgery, radiology, and cardiology.

This is a question more appropriate for the pre-med forum, but here goes...

It is highly unusual if not unheard of to apply for three incredibly different specialties (and to clarify, there is no such thing as a cardiology residency - that is a fellowship after an internal medicine residency). Developing a competitive application takes time and effort - there simply isn't a very practical way to do sub-I's and gather letters in three different fields without substantially weakening your application strength for each of those fields.

All big cities are competitive because people want to live there. In every major city there are programs of varied competitiveness.

If you are a pre-med, it is exceptionally premature to think that you would limit your residency application to one city, especially when you clearly don't even know what field you want to pursue.

You can apply regionally. You can also do an away rotation as an MS4 in your desired location to increase your chances of interviewing/matching there (provided you do a good job). This is becoming more common in general and it is almost a requirement for some fields. Your best bet tho is to be a strong applicant with strong scores, letters, etc to better your chances of matching at your top spot.

Like cards, radiology, and surgery?

Sounds like a future vascular surgeon in the making :naughty:

Might want to look into the several 0+5 vascular residency programs in the NYC area.

Please note that about 2/3 of all residency spots are in NYC. If you want to live in the big apple for a few years then you are in luck. That being said to the OP when you submit your Rank List just put the ones in cities you like at the top and work your way down. This way if you had a chance to match in a city you like you will.
