If you're trying to attend a program that places a high priority on research, and you have none, you're going to be at a disadvantage.

Depends. Board scores, AOA, honors in your clinical rotations, letters of rec, and a good interview are generally more important.

If you are interested in research, go for it. The top tier programs are generally looking to train leaders in the field so some research will help, but it won't cover up any deficiencies.
