Math and MCAT ?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
math on the MCAT is simple. Your best bet is to use study material like EK that is not going to bog you down or intimidate you with complicated computations.

For the MCAT you do not need to know anything beyond trig/algebra:
square roots, proportions, angles, etc.

Can you suck at math and still do ok on the MCAT?

Forget the MCAT, how can you handle chem, physics and ochem if you suck at math?

Does suck mean, "I can't do algebra" or "I can't handle calc"...there's a difference.

I'd like to know what trig information we should memorize for physics.

Just Cos 30, 45, 60 and Sin 30,45, 60, or do we need more? Do we need to know all that square root of 2 over 2 stuff or is it good enough to just know approximate decimal conversion?

Also, how much do we really need to understang logarithms and ln. I'm pretty good with base 10 logs but don't understand ln anymore, and I saw it in some equations.

I am really good at the first part…don’t know about the second part yet.

I was just considering asking a similar question. If it could be said to favor only one or the other, does the MCAT favor the mathematical mind or the verbal reasoning mind?

Luckily, the math involved in general chemistry is not complicated. I had speculated that OChem would be LESS math intensive than GChem, is this correct?

p.s. If this is going to turn into some sort of competition to establish who is the aspiring med-student with the weakest math skills, I would like to be involved.

In my first semester of Ochem - no math
first semester of bio - understanding of simple probabilities for genetics using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
gen chem - solve quadratic eq'n (prob not on MCAT), square root
physics- algebra,trig,proportions,vectors

calc is not needed at all and would only help in reinforcing what you know in algebra/trig/geometry. I would pass on it but I was an engineering student and took 3 semesters of calc.

mcat favors the verbal reasoning mind in my opinion
