I dont understand why they dont account for the (-) in front of -3x?

-3x/(3x - 4y) - 2y/(3x - 4y) - 1

the explanation doesnt account for the - for the first -3x.

has anyone else noticed that?

I have Math Destroyer (1st edition 2010). On question 17 on Practice Test 4, there is no "-" symbol in front of 3x. 😕 Maybe you read the question wrong or you have a different version of destroyer?

The question says to "simplify". However, there is no "-" symbol in front of the 3x like the OP says. He must have read the question wrong.

The choices given are:

A. 2y/ (3x-4y)
B. (3x-2y-1)/ (3x-4y)
C. (6x-2y-1) / (3x-4y)
D. (x-6y) / (3x-4y)
E. 1

im getting A. set the 1 to (3x-4y)/(3x-4y), combine terms, the x's cancel out (if its not "-3x" like in the OP) and you're left with 2y/(3x-4y)

for your first question: there is no "-" symbol in front of 3x and the answer is A. the question asks you to simplify the expression. for the second question:
sqrt(8) = sqrt(4*2)=sqrt(4)*sqrt(2)=2sqrt(2)
