Hi guys,

I am doing math destroyer test 4 Q35 but this question doesnt make any sense to me..

Q: "A survey was taken of 180 people. Each was asked to choose their one favorite type of music. 2/3 of the respondents chose classical music and 1/2 of those remaining chose jazz. How many of the people surveyed chose neither classical music nor jazz?"

First of all, the question doesn't seem right.
Second of all, the answer in the back of the book even more confusing which is "Of the 60 people who prefer jazz or pop, two-thirds, or 40, prefer pop" (pop?what?)

Am I missing something here?

Is the answer 30?
  • 180 = amount of people surveyed
  • Classical = 180 * 2/3 = 120 people
  • People who don't like classical = 180 - 120 = 60
  • Of the people who don't like classical....half of them like jazz...so Jazz = 60/2 = 30
  • how many people didn't like jazz OR classical? = total-(classical+ jazz) --> = 180 - (120+30) = 180 - 150 = 30

The answer choices are:15 , 20, 25, 35, 40

The answer is 40.

Something is wrong with this question and the answer in the book.

Im thinking its 30 also,
180 total people
2/3 of people like classical. 1/3 = 60, *2 = 120
180-120 = 60 people left over.
Of the 60 people left, 1/2 chose jazz. 1/2 of 60 = 30.
60-30 = 30.
Therefore 30 people dont like jazz nor classical?
I have no idea where pop is coming into this. Are yous ure your reading the right question? Maybe its just wrong?

Wizi, I think you may have misread/mistyped the question. I looked in my Math Destroyer (2009), it was question 37 on test 4 for me. On my question it states "two thirds of the respondents chose classical music and one-third of those remaining chose jazz."

(2/3)*180= 120
Therefore 60 remaining
(1/3)*60= 20 - prefer jazz
180-140= 40 people remaining who chose neither classical music nor jazz.

It may have been a typo in just your book.

I am sorry everyone. Its actually "one-third of those remaining chose jazz" not 1/2.
but I think the explanation in the back of the book has a typo.

I am using 2011 version.
