sam spent 25% of the total amount available with him on food and a half of the rest on clothes. then he lends John $30, and now sam is left with $300. What was the total amount available with Sam initially?

This is from cdm. I dont understand why doesnt calculate the 25% in the equation. can some one explain this to me. the answer is $880.

it's just say (0.75X) (O.5)-30=300

I dont get it why we dont add 0.25% to the equation????

1)X is the starting amount
2) he spent 1/4, meaning he has (3/4)x remaining
3) he spent half of this remaining amount. THis means that he has 1/2(3/4)x remaining
4) He gave away $30. 1/2(3/4)x - 30
5) He has $300 left, so

1/2(3/4)x - 30 = 300. SOlve for x
