Okay, the math pre med requirements is a little confusing. Would i be okay if i took a semester of Math 1A (which is the basic calculus i guess) and a semester of statistics, or do i need a full year of calculus? Any advice i can get will be very helpful. I keep hearing different things from every school. Also, ive already taken statistics at the junior college i transferred from, will that fulfill the Statistics requirement or does it have to be at the university level? Thanks again, 😀 help me someone!

Most schools want a full year of calc. But to be sure I'd take the full year, that's the most they require anywhere as far as I've seen.

good luck. 👍

According to MSAR, only 15 schools require calc, and of those, only about 6 want a full year of calc.

Harvard is the only one off the top of my head that requires a year of calc.

Yeah, most schools that I applied to did not require a full year of calculus. Some just wanted one math class (stats, calc, etc.).

ok. I geuss I was misinformed, but I know that some of the schools I've applied to require a full year. The Chair of the biology department at my undergrad suggested a full year because then your not limited from applying to a school for this reason only.

I personally liked math so it wasn't hard for me. But for example some schools require biochem also, (A subject I dread), and even though I'm not looking forward to it I figured I'd take it anyways so as not to be limited on choices because I didn't take it.

Ultimately if you know where you want to apply ahead of time, check the schools website, they all list their course requirements and see what you need to take.

Thats pretty much what i thought to but if i only take the one semester of calculus which seems to be what most schools require, can it be basic calculus or do i need a harder level of calc? Im wishing i dont because im not a big math person. Thank u for all your replies...

The basic calc should be fine

contact the specific schools to be absolutely sure... its the only way to know... each school has their own view on what does and does not count towards the math requirement...

I'd say take the calc 2 if it is not going to hurt your GPA, but if it is then don't

you'd be safe with 2 quarters (1 semester) of calc. i know that harvard, duke, and wash u in st louis req a whole year

I APed out of basic calculus and went straight to multivariable calculus and the like before I decided to go for med school (Math 53, 54, and 55 in Cal). Now, I only have one semester of real calculus with another semester of linear algebra/differential equations. Since I'm interested in those schools that require a year of calculus, would that be ok? I can't go back and take basic calculus now anyways.

I think some of the Texas schools make you have calc.
