would getting a letter of rec from a math professor be considered a science letter? I ask this because i took the same professor 2 semesters in a row and aced both of her classes. I have a good relationship with the professor and she really helped me excell to the next level of my education. She was a professor at my local Community College which will also be a possible set back but I know she will write me a great LOR i did take prerequisite maths with her (college algebra then pre calc) which im worried will also hinder the fact that admissions commitees will look and assume "hey he got an A in her classes but they were easy". What do you guys think? should i try another professor? or should i ask her?

You can use it for either science or nonscience. You could make the case that math is the language of science blah blah blah. Or you could say that math is really an art blah blah blah and so on. I used math letters as nonscience, but I'm sure that it could count for science as well. I think you should ask her and other professor since she's at a community college. For LORs I think you should aim for atleast 3 but no more than 6.

yeah so far i have one from a physics professor a genetics professor a music professor(non science) and 1 MD letter. i was allowed to read the physics professors letter and it sucked. terrible didnt even compliment me that well and misspelled my name randomly. anyways so im not going with that one lol ok ill ask her and 1 more as a back up. thanx man

I used my math letter as a science letter. Math is part of BCPM.. some schools might not take it as a science, ex. NYMC, so you might want to use another letter for them. But most schools take it as a science..

I used a biostatistics professor for an LOR and some schools did not accept it.

good to know. thanks for all the info guys. i was curious as to one more thing. I will also be applying DO, would DO schools consider a math letter of rec a science letter? if not then i might as well just get another one from my old bio teacher or someone. Reason I ask is because ive heard math isnt part of your science GPA on AACOMAS. ok thanks again

I believe KCOM or KCUMB was one of the schools that required my bio prof's letter (which I didn't want to use).

If you use interfolio to distribute your letters, you can send ALL schools your math LOR and only send the bio LOR to schools that require it, if you think it somehow might detract from your app to send it to all schools.

Which schools did not accept it?

I don't remember at this point. Of course, I meant they didn't accept it to satisfy a Science LOR.

I kind of think one was Rush...but other than that I really don't remember

Damn, I think I will have some LOR problems then. I only have 2 letters that I considered "science" and one is a from a calculus prof while the other is from a physics prof. 🙁

Im pretty sure your physics LOR will be fine as its considered in your science GPA and its viewed as a science course. your calculus letter, im guessing might give you some issues as my precalc lor would as well. either or im having the prof. right me one because she enjoyed having me as a student.
