guys, i get as far as here but i don't understand that why this is a 3,4,5 triangle. can anyone help?

base is 7.5 and hight is 10, but i can not figure out the hypot which is the x and offcourse it needs to be converted to miles.

if so...

7.5 10 12.5 the way I got them this was maybe different than what most people do but 7.5/3 and 10/4 both equal 2.5 so now just multiple 5 X 2.5 to get 12.5 This is still a 345 triangle just not with whole numbers.
now just 12.5in X 24 miles/1 in and you will get 300
 
hey, but how did you know that it is a 3,4,5 triangle?

b/c the problem tells u so in a way: the base and the height combined = 17.5 inches and b/c the base (west direction) is 75% of the height. so the easiest way to break up 17.5 inches is by 7.5 + 10 inches. you can further reduce 7.5 and 10 by dividing by 2.5 to give u that 345 triangle as mentioned in earlier posts.
