I recently went to an MD open house where this chart was printed out and handed to prospective students...
https://www.aamc.org/download/321470/data/factstable7.pdf

My question is: Are "acceptees" defined as the number of students with at least 1 acceptance? And "matriculants" defined as the number of students who enroll into medical schools?

These are the definitions that I assumed, but when I saw that the discrepancy between the number of "acceptees" vs "matriculants" (~1000), I questioned my assumptions.
Or is it true that 1000 people were accepted into medical school in the US, but decided not to attend?
Just curious.

possibly its people who deferred their acceptances? I doubt that many people go through the trouble and then don't attend...

Guess its possible though!

Because you are looking at only AAMC data, it is only students accepted/matriculating to allopathic schools. There are students who will be accepted to MD schools and choose to go to Osteopathic schools, Podiatry schools, or foreign medical schools. This makes up the chunk of the 1000 or so students.

Then you'll get some others:
1. There are students every year who will reapply after an acceptance.
2. There are students who will defer their acceptance... Which is to hold onto the acceptance for a year and matriculate in the next year's class. This is generally only done in special cases depending on the school (prolonged illness, etc...)
3. I'm sure there are students who are accepted who just choose not to do medicine and instead go to some other graduate/professional school or just enter the workforce.
