matriculation date?

What is the matriculation date? Does this mean the first day of class for ms1 or when you officially commit to a school that accepted you? I ask because I'm taking the mcat in August but am not planning to apply to med school until June 2016 to start in fall of 2017 and wanted to ensure that this met the "three years before matriculation rule." thank you!
