Maximizing Second Year

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Try to hop on some radiology research projects - at least at my school, the radiology faculty often don't get approached as much and are super nice and appreciative of med students working with them!

Also try to stay at least 1 organ system ahead throughout the year. I found this really helpful, because learning stuff in class became like a review almost, and it helped me fill in any gaps in my knowledge.

You seem to be doing a lot. I will say this, I would maintain studying, try not to burn out, first six months do research, last six focus on just boards.

Do you think it would be reasonable to cold email physicians to see if they have case reports available? Do people do that during the year?
You should go to Grand rounds or something and meet some of the residents and then ask them for research. If you have the energy and can make it work more intesive research like chart reviews would be a high quality of publication at our level.

Might be a stupid question, but what are grand rounds? Do medical students go to them normally? I don't want to intrude on others
At my institution students are welcome at grand rounds. They discuss interesting problems cases, outcomes , research etc. Every specialty and institution does it differently.

I would email residents about research before I ask attendings, however it's good to get to know/meet your program director/chair.
