Has anyone worked with this program? Anyone have any reviews or comments they'd be willing to share? I'm going to be doing this right at the end of medical school and I'm looking for a program that let's me function at the level of an Intern (more or less) and which provides just about 100% immersion in the Spanish language.

It's interesting that you have condemning attitudes of American doctors and our health care system, while you plan to practice abroad.

I guess this is appropriate in light of all your negativity.

Fix or bail. We all have choices.

It seems as if every one of your posts on the allopathic forum is an insult with absolutely nothing substantive (per the "impending doom" thread above, anyway). Why even bother posting at all?

Oh and taking some time to learn a language and gain skills that can make someone a better doctor back in the US is hardly "bailing." 🙄

1) Mayan Medical Aid is a fouth year elective.

2) Stalking posters from thread to thread is wierd.

Stick around kid. Making a snap judgement off of ~3 posts is hard to do. I don't disagree with you entirely though, my post was out of line here. I will admit when I'm wrong.

Stalking is a harsh word. When 2 threads are both at the top of the page, sometimes I read the one below it.

Although I will not add anymore to this thread, just thought your thrashing of the entire US system was an interesting take on things.

I didn't do this program specifically, but I went to Antigua prior to 1st year. I don't really have advice, just my experience:

1. Guatemalans are really chill and sweet people and I felt safe down there (exception: Guatemala city is dangerous). I did some course where they teach you up to 8 hours a day (too much). The teachers were top-notch.

2. Antigua is much more touristy than you would be going, which could go either way. I personally would have preferred going to the boonies since Antigua was kind of a party scene and there were a bunch of other white people hanging around. I had friends that went to Lake Atitlan and absolutely loved every minute of it. You might want to consider malarial prophylaxis though (although Google tells me you don't need it for Antigua and Atitlan).

3. I went down there thinking I could pick up the language in a few weeks, and needless to say my confidence was crushed. Either way I picked up more Spanish in 3 weeks than I did in an entire semester of college. If it were me, I would do the 8-week deal, and give myself time to absorb some of the nuances of the language (there are like 5 different past tenses, lol)

4. You can't go wrong with Guatemala. If you can get the trip funded that would be an incredible experience. The Spanish down there is very similar to Mexican spanish spoken in the border towns (and the states for that matter), except it is a little more formal. This would be helpful since you want to be able to use more back in the states. Plus, the people down there are dirt poor and sincerely need help. You know, that whole altruism thing.

While there is substantial anonymity on the internet, this is still a community. Believe it or not, what you post in one thread people will actually read. There aren't THAT many regular posters, but there are definitely regular readers. When a single user has themes that come out across in multiple threads, any person paying attention will pick up on them.

Also, your avatar is particularly unique, making you more noticeable than you may have realized. I think only Depakote has one more memorable (because it dances).

Paying Attention and Caring about the community are very different than stalking.

That being said, thanks for the apology MCAT Guy, the comment was a little out of place. I thought I had missed an edit in PerrotFish's original post. (Quotes would have made it totally legit).
